Steve..what is "small" in your terms? 2 hours to and from work in traffic..4 hours a day.If there is an option I would seriously be looking for it.

You're right Howard. There are a lot of people looking to stop commuting, but that's just the culture here in California. Locally, the wages are substantially lower than one can get elsewhere, therefore, that's one reason they keep going. The other is the price of housing. We have some of the lowest prices for housing in the entire state. In fact we are (and have been) the fastest growing region in the country, because housing is just cheaper. So getting a nice house in a relatively crime free area...people don't mind commuting (too much).
Anyway, I know the cars in Europe are quite a bit smaller than they are here in the states. A small car here would be a Mitsubishi Mirage (which is what my wife drives to work) or Ford Focus...something like that.

Fair enough Steve, wasn't getting at you personally. Thought you may have been one of those driving about in a Dodge Ram or some other 5 litre Monster. A Focus would also be considered "small" over here although Vauxhall (General Motors)Corsa's and the like with 1.2Litre engines are even more popular, especially with youngsters and new drivers..economical and usually with a years Insurance thrown in..
I agree with you on the comfort bit though..there's nothing worse than a long drive and arriving totally knackered at the end of it. A 2 Litre is about right . Howard |

Considering Howard's photograph...would you buy a Vauxhall from this man?
:) I have the ultimate solution...I don't go anywhere.

I drive Chevy's smallest pick-up truck, with a gas tank that -- if bone dry -- will take fifteen gallons. It cost me $50.85 (!!!) yesterday to fill up. The only upside to the high cost of essence de petrol is that it may finally kill off the bane of my day job, the "free estimate."

There's a gas station between L.A. and Vegas, in the middle of nowhere, with no gas stations within 40 miles of it in either direction, that was charging over $7/gallon last time I checked!
Here in Vegas, most places seem to have it around $3.01/gallon. Check out GasBuddy.com, and it will show you where the lowest prices in your area are located. |

Scott, that gas station is going to get nailed - the feds are about to pass an anti-gouging law that will nail his assets to the wall!
Gotta love THAT! Lee Darrow, C.H.

On FOX news today it was reported that a good old fashion price war went down in PA.
During the course of 7 hours gas prices dropped from $2.89 down to $2.36. |

Even though I drive all over the east coast, I'm torn over the price of gas... Yes I need to travel a lot because of work. Yes I'm a poor starving actor. Yes, I may actually have to get a dayjob and bike to it after a breakfast of top ramen. However, I am excited about everyone finally paying attention to the fact we need to find a renewable resource for our energy needs. In the meantime, it sucks and we'll all plough through. Good luck guys. May the gigs be close to home.

$2.69 a gallon and I'm feeling FORTUNATE!!
Dang! Thing that really gets me is that gas is 14 CENTS a gallon in Venezuela! This REALLY stinks, seeing that in West Texas ALONE (where I was born and raised) there is enough oil in the ground to make enough Gasoline to last the USA until DOOMSDAY is just SITTING there!! Makes me SICK! There was a local news story the other day...Telling how the Pawn Shops in the area (Ozark Mountain region of the USA) were making out like bandits due to folks pawning stuff so they could have the $$ to buy gas to get to work and back... We are heading down a VERY slippery slope here folks... Either we find a way to do business WITHOUT petroleum, or all of us 'advanced nations' go back to the stone age. Sad thing is, we've LOST the knowledge to be able to survive without our ablity to move about at will. This is a warning sign folks.... It would be prudent to be making plans N-O-W. Prof. Piper

$3.349/gallon here in my part of SoCal, for regular unleaded.
What's the deal? I remember cracking hydrogen gas off water in a very simple experiment in chemistry class aeons ago...and acetylene gas is even easier to obtain. Methane's pretty simple to acquire as well. These are very potent gases with low combustion emissions -- why are they not more widely used? Or for that matter, why is 14-cent-per-gallon Venezuelan gasolina not being imported by the tanker-ful? Amish, indeed. I used to shoe horses. I'll pass on the hay-burner solution to the high cost of transport, thanks |

Several labs are working on solutions to this problem and there are some interesting developments being made. As for the other gases you referenced. I will have to do more research but it more than likely is that they are poor carriers of energy. Again requiring more energy t produce than they will deliver or provide a very low mileage to mass ratio.

We need POOP cars--cars that run on--you know!
Gas out here is 2.99-3.10 a gal (Upstate ny) I drive to work 60 mi a day when I go. I think that's kind of a lot. I would love to live in a area where I could walk and do everything within my living area. My friend from France who just visited commented on the "spread-outedness" (my word, not hers) of NY--upstate. You have to drive everywhere to get what you need. There are no town centers where most people go to and live by...we are all burbanites. BUT cars are needed in the 2+ ft snow in the winter when it's neg 0. We do drive everywhere and need some kind of transport that is cheaper--or gas. Ellen |

In high school I did a project on technology that could basically turn garbage (basically anything at all) into oil. I wonder what ever happened to that.
