I have a Question:
Do you think that The Encyclopedia of ball juggling and the Complete Juggler are good books to buy? from reviews ive seen , these 2 books should last me a VERY long time . What are your opinions on them? And also , does the encyclopedia of ball juggling include any contact juggling? Thanks , Ben |

The complete juggler has a good section for every prop, and David Finnegan has updated that book with "juggling from start to star". The encyclopedia of ball juggling is a great BALL JUGGLING book, but I don't think it covers contact juggling. If you finish the Finnegan book I would recomend "juggling with finesse" by Kit Summers who before his accident included 7 clubs juggling in his Atlantic City show. This book covers how to be a real professional juggler. HAVE FUN Al Angello

Remember that all books are limited in both the way they describe a trick and content. The complete juggler is ok for some stuff but woefully limited for other stuff it also fails to let you know what is difficult and what is easy. I have other problems with the book but it is still the most comprehensive on the market.
The ball juggling book is fairly good in its limited scope and is clear and informative. If you wish to be a ball juggler then this is your best guide. However, rather than buying a book (or as well as) why not visit http://www.jugglingdb.com and find both the nearest workshop to you and also a vast selection of videos which will help you learn more quickly. Nigel is right a book doesn't compare to a jugglers meeting, or even better a juggling convention. There is an indescribable osmosis effect that happens when jugglers get together that no book, or video can ever come close to.

Juggling with Finesse is a very good book!
Another ball juggling book that might be of interest is "The Jugglers Hand Book" by Bruce Stone. He developed a notation system (s-notation) that can communicate any possible ball juggling pattern. It's a little complicated, but he's an incredible ball juggler, and the book can stimulate your creativity dramatically. I agree with Al on the human interaction factor...nothing can beat getting together with other jugglers!

Get them both! Buy books, not videos. And yes, go to conventions and meet other jugglers.

Read juggling with finness last because it assumes you are an accomplished amatuer who wants to become a professional.

Here's a suggestion if you don't have or can not attend a juggling festival...
Go to your local YMCA, get a general membership and start juggling in the gym (be sure not to get in the way of any b-ball games!) You will be AMAZED by the number of folks who will approach you who can also juggle... Whether they are of the same skill level as you or are well and beyond your level, you WILL learn something new... And that, in and of itself, is the key. Keep learning, keep juggling, and never, EVER sweat dropping... We all do that, as gravity works no matter where you are! Keep em flying! Prof. Piper

Hi,
Just wondered how you were getting on with the books you ordered? I've always liked both the Dancey books personally. Take care, Ros

I'm a fan of both Dancey's Club Compendium and Ball Encyclopedia- well-written, and full of good quality material. "Complete Juggler" seems to be easier to get hold of, though, and so may be just as sensible a starting point for some people. I have to admit that I find the style patronising on occasions, but, hey, perhaps that's just me.
As to wheter you wants books or videos / DVDs... I think it's an on-going debate which isn't going to finish any time soon. By reading, you have to use your own imagination, and visualise how you want your juggling to look; with video, it's there on a plate, and you don't want to end up juggling exactly like the instructor without realising it. On the other hand, you might find it easier to see what is going on in a video, and so pick things up more quickly. It's roundabouts and swings - perhaps use a video for the basics, and then a book for picking up finesse / more advanced tricks, or, as most everyone else has said here, go and hang out with some other jugglers, if possible. |

Hi Neil
Welcome to the magic Café. Juggling with finess by Kit Summers is a book to look at after you have finished the others because it deals mostly with how to become a pro. HAVE FUN Al Angello
