Much more heated and argumentative than was nessecary though. For that I apologize. Honestly, I don't want hard feelings.
I just can't understand it. I don't know how everyone else learned magic. I know how I did, My brother showed me a TT trick and Sponge balls, After searching dilegently I found a couple of books, and Tannens catalog. After several years of lone study practice and error, I began to understand what magic was. For me it is more than the tricks and audience, it was a secret passion, one that I enjoyed even when alone. Something of mine. My magic is mine, because I worked for it. Were I to star in a magic special using derivatives of San key's effects with explanations, he would probably be incensed. Rightly so. The jumping rubber band is a trick I use, with very positive results. I would prefer it not be given away, and am impotent to stop it. I use the french drop less regularly, but a false put is a false put, I would prefer the concept not be given away. Too bad for me, I would like magic to be more than a trinket we give away.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

The "French drop" is of course a false take.

A recent effect exposed by Jay on his kids' show was the one where a selected card is returned and lost in the pack and the cards are then ribbon-spread face down on the table. The performer holds the wrist of the performer, passing their hands along the cards, until the participant lowers their pointer finger (or a pencil they are holding) onto a card. It is the chosen card. I can't remember if this is Annemann or Corinda.

Just caught the most recent of Jay's tv kids show. On it he reveal the coin matrix using four coins, four cards, complete with the pick up under the cards, and all.
This is a far stretch from the jumping rubber bands and the wobbly pencil. Anyone upset yet? - entity

He teaches a mixture of Al S.'s version and the Ross Bertram version on a handkerchief.

Perhaps it's just a phase he's going through. Perhaps, one day certain investments he's made, say, in the stock market will pay off and he won't have to resort to doing this kind of thing. One thing to note is that TVO is commercial-free public television, effectively a regional Canadian equivalent of PBS. While Sankey is no doubt getting tons of publicity with free-spending six to nine year olds, he likely isn't making (directly) a ton more than coverage of his expenses. Taxpayers wouldn't stand for it. While I see, understand and appreciate both sides of the discussion here, I have to admit it - I am 34 years old and love watching this show that is intended for pre-teens. Dave

Hey Dave,
Jay Sankey didn't film this in association with TVO. TVO bought the series. It was filmed in Ottawa with some other production company. (Also, if filmed with TVO, it would have been Toronto at the studio) By the way, I think Jay just wants to be as cool as the guy who was on TVO Kids before "Spellz" his tv show aired, you know .... I think his name was something like Mark Baluk. lol - just joking, however I was on TVO Kids twice now. This was in Toronto and Broadcasted LIVE to like TONS of people. heh. The worst would be screwing up and not being able to recover well enough in front of half the country. lol |

Thanks Mark, you can likely validate my point then - you weren't paid a whole heck of a lot to appear on TVO Kids, were you? And I'm not looking for any specifics - but I am still feeling that I may be right that Jay didn't earn any sort of serious dough for this series of public telelvision appearances. Dave

Why is everyone so worried about what someone else is doing? In any possible business where there are trade secrets, there is always competition and the guarding of trade secrets, etc...
I saw Jay put out trick after trick in neat little marketed packages. At first I thought, well looks like he wants money. But who doesn't? Can any of you honestly say that if you were appraoched to do this kind of thing, you would say no? Heck no. Even if you're anti-exposure, you would think "Well, I'm anti-exposure, but I'm sure with proper selection of material, I can work something out" Good for him. And to all the people who feel threatened by this (admit it, you're threatened that this will affect your shows) then stop doign amgic 6 year-olds can figure out. I'm sorry but no exposure has ever hurt my performing. Not one bit. You know why? because when it comes down to it, if you're good enough at what you do, people don't honestly care if they might have an idea how it works. Do you think that not a single person at any of your performances had a clue how something went down? I bet you they did. Do you still watch magic shows and performers every time you get the chance? Of course you do. But oh no, you know the secrets. Shouldn't this push you to improve your magic to the point of nto being affected by this? Here is my point: The only people who think this is a negative thing are mediocre magicians. I'm nto saying this to be shocking or to put down a group of people. I'm saying if you seriously evaluate who you are and what you do and consider this a threat, then you need improvement. Can you not play on the fact that people know a secret? The one ahead principle my friends. You know a secret, they find out, you know they know, so be one step ahead. Use a pull instead of a thumbtip. There are tons of ways you could think about improving yourself before you start to criticise someone with a list this big of accomplishments. I have no respect for Sankey that didn't come from understanding what he is capable of. If I had never heard of the guy, and went to a show that he was doing, I would be behind him all the way. Just think before you judge. And also, try spending less time on the internet complaining, and more time honing your act and everything will be fine. |

There is usually no good reason to teach "magic" to children or even adults for that matter.
Usually Some can get beyond the 'clever' or 'guile' and find the gift of magic. They are the ones who need the tricks. The rest are better served learing to accept that they are not clever and that guile is a very bad thing most of the time. ie grow up and quit messing in magic becuase "secrets" make you "cool". And to Jay... really not so good to sell out ideas which are not yours to teach.

I wonder if/when he will introduce them to mentalism? 22 Blows to the Head may get the point across.
If the series continues, he will run out of "run of the mill" tricks and will have to move onto what children entertainers feed their family with. May not affect the magic world but could certainly result in more and more ticked off performers. I for one dislike the cliche "I've seen this already" when performing for children. JMO.
