Hello All,
I am looking for a name of an effect and where I might find it in print/video. I can't recall where I saw it but it is a sucker type trick where you make a silk change colors. Then you tell the audience that you will show them how it is done. You tell them you have two silks and show them how you hide them and of course they go invisible... So you don’t really tell them how it is done... Thanks for any help!

Mark, Hank Lee sells it as 'Half-dyed Silk by Billy McComb' (rest his soul).
Hope this helps.

Laflin magic (now Lock Family Magic) sells the complete trick also. They have it in printed instructions and on their DVD's. The title is usually, 'Comedy Color Changing Silk'.
See also Pat Page's DVD on stage magic from http://www.llpub.com Check out such books as Ron Wilson 'The Uncanny Scott' or Roger Klause in Concert Book or out of pring book 'Ken Brooke The Unique Years' or a little different version in the book 'The Vernon Chronicles More Lost Inner Secrets' by Steven Minch Another out of print version is printed booklet, 'The Famous Town House Color Changing Silk Routine, 'was my face red' by Bev Taylor. This was also published in the short lived Fabjance Magic magazine. This is a classic plot and if you do a search you will find numerous references to this effect here on the Café. But this should get you started. Abbott's Magic have the rights from Billy McComb for his half dyed version and sell the complete outfit. I believe Hughes Magic ( http://www.hughesmagic.com ) also supply a very nice version of the silk with a great half dyed silk only. I suggest palmo gimmick that can be purchased from Rice Magic ( http://www.silkkingmagic.com/ ) or laflin ( http://www.lockfamilymagic.com/public/in......9ccc5231 ) or Viking Magic. |

Lock doesn't have it anymore. I just noticed this the other day as I wanted to pick up that version too. (I recently got the Viking version and wanted to get the palmo version from Lock)

I think you should check with them again. There was a shortage of Palmo's for a while. They still supply dealers, so maybe an email will turn up a new supply.

This is such a standard now that it has been adapted for almost any color changing silk routine, including the use of the Vernet TT, any of the various color change gimmicks and so on. Use small silks and give it a try with a small cardboard tube made by wrapping a strip of posterboard around your forefinger. Assuming you know the moves for doing this (you'll find them in Rice or Tarbell), you should have to trouble getting the effect you desire.

Spellbinder,
At our ages we can always spare a plastic pill bottle for a dye tube. Just cut the bottom out and cover the outside with flesh colored BandAids. (Spend, Spend, Spend) Keep scheming! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

I think a ping pong ball will work better for a homemade gimmick. Cut 1 end the size of a nickle and the other the size of a quarter. A ping pong ball will take up to a 12 or 15 inch silk. I would consider the diamond cut silks from Jay Scott Berry.

Ok, thanks for the push wmhegbli. I contacted Lock Magic and talked to Rebecca. (Nice lady btw) she said they no longer have them as a packaged set although they do sell all the part/props individualy. I had just recently made an order from them and she remembered my name and let me know that the believes Laflin's routine for half dyed / comedy color change is on his Palmo DVD.
So, Mark, I will report back when my DVD arrives. I'll let you know if it's on there. ~Craig Posted: May 5, 2006 3:35pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I received the Laflin video today! booyah! I like it a lot. Duane Laflin is a great performer AND a great teacher. Mark- The Secrets of Silk Magic Vol4 has what you are looking for on it as far as learning from a video source. Lock magic has the video in stock for sale. If you KNOW you want to do this piece, PM me and I'll give you the list of what you'll want to order if you don't already own the props. ~Craig |
