Has anyone here ever successfully built their own "The Thing"-prop and can offer any tips? I have Bill Abbott's "Stand Up Magic For Kids" DVD which provides instruction on building the props, but there are a few details that are glossed over.
I have constructed the main gimmick with a hanger wire and ball without much problem, but finding and sewing the cloth is where I am at a loss. I spent an hour last week in a fabric store looking for something that would work. All Bill specifies on his DVD is some type of non-wrinkly, smooth, polyester fabric. I bought a couple yards of some fabric that I thought would work, but once sewn together it looks awful. It may be my wife's sewing skills or the fabric. I just don't know. Also, the suggested 18" cloth size seemed much too small. So does anyone have any sewing, fabric, and/or size tips for "The Thing"? Any other hints or tips from others who may have built their own? |

Hi,
Why not e mail Bill. A quick Google search with his name will give you his web site and e mail address. If you have the DVD and the instructions to create it are on there, then he would be the one to give you the clarifications you are seeking. Any personal contact I have had with Bill have shown him to be quite the gentleman and I'm sure he'll respond positively. All the best, Rob |

I made one and used it a lot. I am not sure of the fabric I just went and found some stuff I liked and made it. The important thing is that the fabric hangs right. Not too stiff, the stuff I have is like a heavy satin.

Rob, I did send him a PM and am waiting for a potential response. Otherwise, I figured I'd throw it out to others to see what they have done as well. Especially since it seemed as though Bill on his DVD didn't really know that much about the sewing aspect of the cloth.

He is touring with his lecture now. It might take awhile for him to get back to you.

I have made one as well. The fabric that he suggests you use is the micro fiber fabric. When I attended one of his lectures he said that he couldn’t find any more of the royal blue micro fiber fabric in the US. I ended up just going to the fabric store and I found this really nice fabric that has worked well for me.
Bill is a really nice guy so Im sure that he can give you all the help you need Good Luck! Matt

I will also vouch for Bill Abbott he is an amazingly personable magi. He has helped me a number of times with his effects.

I built the gimmick then took the video to my tailor...I'm less than worthless with a needle. He watched the video and stitched the gimmick for me. Works like a dream. I get the biggest kick out of kids who are familiar with the Zombie who try to peek under the cloth then walk away dumb-founded.

Does anyone know if the Stand Up Magic For Kids video goes into as much detail in terms of performance of the Thing as the video that comes with the actual gimmick for $120?

For anyone who has had this built by a tailor or seamstress, how much did they charge to build "The Thing"?
I started to make my own recently, however, soon realized that it would look much better if done by a professional. |

I just bought one. It was $135 from http://www.morrisseymagic.com/thing.htm and I am very pleased. It comes with a glass box, which I could probably find somewhere, but that would be too much like going shopping for my blood. Add that to myinferior sewing skills, and it became a no brainer.

As far as I know, the pre-made "Thing" has been discontinued.
At least, I haven't been able to find it in stock anywhere. |

How good is the teaching on the DVD stand up for kids and the Thing. I know the thing would have better teaching but how much better than stand up for kids? Also where can I watch Bill's lecture?
