I am not sure where to post this, but here it goes:
Tonight I was performing Keith Lack's wonderful "Creature". It is a very gentle, yet bizarre at the same time. Because of this I perform it for children. In my presentation I end by causing the creature to vanish (a simple retention vanish) as I am "handing" him to the spectator. Tonight, I did the routine for a Mexican family. They had a four year old girl, and she loved the routine. I "handed" the creature to her mother, but "oopps! He can only be seen when it is dark!". A bit later this little girl saw me again and spoke in Spanish to her father. Being a gringo I had no idea what she said. Her father translated to me that his daughter wanted to "see the animal" again. I did it again, but this time I tried to hand it to her, and she freaked out and jumped a mile! I should have listened to her again because her father said that she wanted to "see the animal again", but in fact (something he told me later) she wanted to "see the Chupacabra again". Guess who just found a new presentation Keith's "Creature" is a fantastic effect and if you do not yet have one, GET ONE!!!! You will not regret it! |

LOL
Isn't it great when an audience hands you a new idea? Sometimes they can come up with the best stuff. Some of my 'best' ideas started out coming from audience members. Glad to see my experience isn't unique. Gotta love it.

Dpe666...good one! The Chup is very real to some Latinos...when I showed one of my unknown creature exhibits, I had some customers (adults) who would ask 'what is it?' When I said it MIGHT be a Chupacabra they looked again and would Cross themselves. Imagination is a powerful thing.

If you can't track down Keith, I have a few creatures, creature 3-packs, and creature II sets available. Email me for details, as the availability of each is limited.
My chupacabra, however, is not for sale. He's just contracted himself into an extended run this summer... Chris chris.handa@verizon.net |

Thanks for the story, Dpe. Have you experimented with making the Creature appear from a handful of dirt or some other substance? It's great for outdoor work...just scoop up some dirt with a few lines about what strange creatures you can find underground. In fact, this reminds me of a story an old man told me once when I lived in the South. He used to drive a metal pole into the ground (I think that was it; memory fails me) then strike it very hard with something repeatedly, sending vibrations deep underground. He would do this for quite some time, but eventually (he swore it was true!) earthworms would erupt onto the surface by the hundreds! Then it was time to go fishing! Could be inspiration for a ritual of this type which the mage performs to 'summon little demons in the earth'! Perhaps it could be a little dance. Or smack the ground with your hand while uttering some important gibberish. Grab some dirt and make the Creature appear! What do you think?

I think that is a great idea, although I HATE to have my hands dirty.
