Which effect do you think is best using the Mirror/Stay Stack?
I like Marlo's Matching Routine, looks amazing... If you can do perfect faros this stack is incredible. |

Check out 'Pairs' in Card Cavalcade II by Jerry Mentzer. It is an excellent trick. But, I'm partial since I came up with it.

Check out Allan Ackerman's version of Marlo's routine. It's in his lecture notes; it's by far the best stay stack routine I know.

Paul Swinford's Seekers routine is worth a look. It can be found in S. Brent Morris's book on the faro shuffle called Magic Tricks, Card Shuffling, and Dynamic Computer Memories.

O.K. mr. Kjellstrom, I know the mirror stack is that the same as the stay stack? BTW I would love to know more routines for the faro shuffle. I have been practicing this and it is now perfect. I can do a straddle, in, and out faro anytime.
Any help with some routines requiring the faro would be appreciated.

There is an old manuscript titled "Staggard" which came out at Abbott's. It was performed by Eddie Joseph. If you find a copy you have a winner.

Doesn't Phil Goldstein have a number of effects based on this in Redivider? Or am I misrecollecting?

One good thing about the book is that he gives you a number of utility techniques for using the mirror stack -- shuffles, how to transform a sequential stack into a mirror stack, and so on. There are lots of good ideas for effects using this principle. And the book itself is very cleverly written, with jokes based on verbal palindromes to reflect the "palindrome" nature of the mirror stack. I recommend this book highly. "Will the Cards Match?" by Larry Becker is a classic effect that uses the mirror stack. There's a lot of information on this trick here on the Café, including many good variations. You can use the Quicksearch feature to find all that information. |

I haven't really dealved into Mirror/Stay stacks, so I have nothing to compare it with, but Roy Walton's "The Arrangment" from Vol.2 is a wonderful/baffling piece of magic.

Sal Piacente has a cool routine "Sal's Memory Opener" in his Expert Card Magic Lecture Notes DVDs. I saw Sal do this for a bunch of magicians and he literally fried them with this effect. I have used it as well and it is such a strong effect it is SICK!
Stay Stack is really an area that has not been fully exploited in my humble opinion. Someone else mention Redivider by Goldstein/Maven. This is a great little book that has some great (as Harry Lorayne would say) "pathway ideas". Best, Vlad |
