I've already posted this in the juggling forum, but just to be thorough...
has anyone tried contact juggling with any brand of fire ball. if so, how was the effect? can they take a lot of abuse? |

In terms of safety: I guess it would depend on what sort of fire ball you were using. It if were one of the FyreFli balls, which is essentially a wick core mounted in the cente of a coated wire cage, then, you may be okay, because these balls are designed to be juggled with bare hands. If, however, you are looking at using the Mr. Babache fire balls, which are wooden (?) balls wrap in wicking, then I'd suggest that you probably shouldn't bother, because these are designed to be juggled whilst wearing fire gloves.
In terms of actually managing to do the trick: as far as I am aware, unlike crystal / stage balls, fire balls are rarely perfectly round. So, if you can do the routine without requiring perfectly spherical balls, then, you'll probably be okay, but, the FyreFli only roll in one plane, I think, because of the way the wire is coiled- you should be able to roll them parallel to the coil direction, but, I'd be surprised if you could roll them perpendicular to the coil direction... I can't say this for sure, though; just my thoughts from when I've used them in a normal juggling routine, applied to this question. In terms of "can they take a lot of abuse?" - I presume that you're not going to be attempting any form of juggling with fire kit unless you can do the same routine with normal balls first? So, if it's a contact routine, you should be able to do the routine with normal crystal / stage balls first, before attempting to use fire balls. The Mr. Babache ones will take quite a lot of "abuse", from memory, because of the way they are constructed, but I wouldn't want to drop FyreFli quite so often. But, as long as you treat them with common sense, you're probably not going to wreck your investment. In terms of being a performance piece- I'm not sure about this. Contact juggling works best when your audience can see what is going on - seeing the balls rolls up and down your arms, across your neck etc. For best results with fire, you need things to be pretty dark, so, the audience will probably only see a ball moving around- they are unlikely to appreciate the intricacies of what you are doing. It's much the same as with juggling fire clubs - the best reaction often comes from the simply tricks which make nice patterns in the air, rather than the technically complex stuff which you can use to impress (if not entertain) the audience in a normal club routine. Just my thoughts on this... hope it helps. |

I've contact juggled with my Fyreballs quite a bit...
They take abuse with no real problems...And contrary, sorry, to the above post I've had no issues with whether the coils are perpendicular or not... As far as being in the dark...True point above, however, if your routine is complex enough, it will matter very little to your audience if they see your arms/hands... The fluidity of the fire ball will intrigue them. Prof. Piper (Terry)

Trinket, just about any magician that see your picture and reads what you write.
Our friends don't have to agree with me about everything and some that I hold very dear don't have to agree about anything, except where we are going to meet them for dinner.
