I appreciate the comments, but I was actually "thinking like a spectator" when I posed the question. There's a logical, if incomplete, explanation that, it seems to me, can easily be surmised without any knowledge of the techniques of magic.
Case in point ... my wife, who is married to an infuriating man who never tells her how anything is done, and, therefore, has little knowledge of magic's techniques. On first viewing, she didn't know why I was scoffing at it ... but when I rewound the tape, she figured it out on only a second viewing. Now, I do concede that it took a second viewing, and my claim that it was ridiculously easy to figure out, for her to come up with the solution, and if you say you've been performing it to great reactions, then perhaps that's not a concern. It's worth mentioning, though, that three days of performing might not be the best sample size. As you know, there are many effects that kill with some crowds, but fall flat with others. And I wonder how you're presenting it: are you presenting it in the midst of a series of effects, or are you in "non-performing" mode, and waiting for people to point out that your shoelace is untied? If the latter, I can see it being effective, because people aren't expecting you to have prepared anything "magical", and so it does appear completely impromptu. But if you're performing a number of effects, or if you're like Blaine and you walk up to people and say, "look, my shoelace is untied", then I wonder if, knowing that this is a pre-planned effect, people will latch on to the solution. I suppose that's why I made the "party gag" comparison. It seems to me that the effect needs to have an impromptu appearance, and needs to be done outside the context of "a magician performing", for it to be pulled off at all. And I get the feeling that this will be one of those effects that no one is doing a year from now. |

I do the Self UNTYING Shoe Laces at least once a day. It's the only trick I do that I'm not sure how I do it.

SantaClaus.... As you mentioned the second time around, I have been performing it nonchalant in "non-performing" mode, although I am always in performing mode.... I was in my local mall, trying on new sneaks, walking around, etc... I was also out at a few different bars and restaurants...... It was a way to get people to come up to you and ask you what happened, then there's your lead into performing and hitting up different groups.......Never repeated it for same groups though (kind of difficult to reset in a bar), and I also did it for friends and family on Mother's Day. They all know I always do magic, and the only one who figured it out was my brother who has a working knowledge of effects, just not a performer.... And it is suggested to NEVER say "...Look my shoelace is untied, HMMMMM......."
If the effect is seriously doubted and SO esy for everyone to figure it out, go to your local mall and walk around. Don't mention it to anyone, don't point it out, even go try on some new shoes... See what reactions you get. Again, are we as magicians, performing for magicians everyday or are we performing for lay people..... This isn't FFISM or Grand Prix, we want to get paid and perform for everyday, public.........Just my opinion.....JPV

I too have heard the statement that Jay stole the trick from Luke Dancy but I doubt that. Here is a bit of background that I've heard.
Luke supposedly came up with the idea some time back. However, he felt that it was inferior because the shoelaces don't actually tie themselves. Luke then worked on developing a method to actually show the laces being tied. During this time, Jay independently came up with the same method that Luke had. If it's anyone's fault, it's Luke's for not publishing it. Eric Mead has also stated that he come up with the same method before Luke Dancy did, and now Eric Mead credits Jay with publishing; therfore, it's Jay's. Imagine if Luke now publishes a method where you actually see the laces being tied. Many magicians would think that would be fantastic, but in my opinion it would be inferior. Here is why. If you see the laces being tied slowly it no longer is magic. It's a great piece of technology. Remember in Back to The Future 2 when Michael J. Fox has those special Nike's that tie themselves? If a spectator would see this happen, they would most likely say, "There must be some great technology within those shoes." It no longer is magic, it's more of a puzzle. Spectators don't care how it happens they just want to see it happen. In my opinion, Jay wins because he didn't over complicate the method, it's a pure piece of magic to laymen. Henok |
