Hey everyone,

I am interested in the effect where a piece of paper is bounced on a fan or rolled in a brandy glass and visually transforms into an egg. There are some things I am unsure about. I am curious to know if there is a way to transform the egg in the hands alone without the aid of something keeping the paper/egg in motion. As well, what is the best book/video/DVD to get the most handling tips on this gimmick? And what is the best egg to purchase?

Thanks so much,

DJ

Hey DJ. get Jeff McBride's Magic on Stage DVD. I am not sure which one it is on but it won't be hard to find out. You can actually make your own. Put an egg in vinegar and let it sit for about 3 or 4 days. then being very careful, poke a hole in both ends of the skin and let the contents run out. This might take a few tries but I did it and it works great. Make sure you keep it in rubbing alcohol for storage.

Normally the trick is called, 'Egg on Fan' or 'Egg in Glass'. This can be learned from the following sources:

Bob Blau's World of Magic
Routined Manipulation by Lewis Ganson
Magic and Methods of Ross Bertram

This has also been discussed in several threads here on the Café, so a search may turn up more information.

Check out "The Encyclopedia of Egg Magic," by Donato Colucci. Complete instructions on manufacture and use of the required gimmick -- also details on accomplishing the same with commercially available gimmicks.

This is a great book that gets your mind racing!

DJ,
I love this trick! I think it is unique, visual, and memorable. And yes, you can do the thing in your hands or in or on just about anything if you so desire and stage it correctly. I have come up with about half dozen working variations on this effect and it is a signature item for me, hence the altered versions to use at repeat engagements. Go for it!!

Thanks so much everyone for all the help!

UFO, you have given me great news, I was hoping it was possible to do it in the hands but didn't know because I thought the egg had to be in motion during the transformation. You made my day!

Thanks all,

It does have to be in motion... you would have to bounce it from hand to hand, or up and down in one hand...

WHAT TO DO?

Get it and start working on your own style and method.

Pete,

Thanks so much again, I actually have the egg on its way as we speak, as well as the Encyclopedia of Egg Magic. I do like the idea of bouncing it on the hand for the change.

Thanks again,

DJ

Okay. To be specific... yes, as Pete said, it does need to move about. However, you can bounce it on or between hands or you can "roll it around" on the palm or "cage" it between both hands with open fingers and make it happen. So, yes, movement but also yes, the hands. I didn't mean to mislead you there, my friend.

If you wish a static transformation without movement, you might want to switch methods. No pun intended.

Leirpoll has a version, Toilet Paper to Egg, in his Pocket Power.

Pocket Power, has a number of other nice effects that I like, such as his no gimmick Bill Change - very clean looking, use borrowed bill, hand out at end.

Call me old-fashioned, but might I recommend a ten dollar Dover book* that every magician ought to have and re-read regularly? T. Nelson Downs' The Art of Magic. As for what to purchase, Downs said "This egg should be an ordinary one -- the more ordinary the better."

* Now, if you can find a nice old edition of it, so much the better. I've had my eyes open for one for some time now myself!

Cheers!

Check out Leirpoll's routine - his misdirection is excellent.
