Does anyone organize their effects themselves as well, like Ammar does with his cue sheets? Would Access be good for this?

If you want one of my top secret tips, check out a software called "freemind".
Unless you are just cataloging items, "freemind" is a better option for organizing your act. it's mind mapping software. it's the best. very fast and easy to use. very free.

Excel works for me also. I have a few files for books, videos, props, routines, routines I would like to learn... then a master file that has all of those with tabs. The best file I created was the file for my routines. I wrote down every trick that I can think of that I performed in the last 10+ years then went category crazy. Opener/Middle/Closer, How Solid of a routine 1-5, Props needed, # of assistance, stage/close-up/parlor, angle issues, etc, outs... This makes it real easy to create new routines, put shows together, etc...

There are a bunch of us around would would certainly agree that someone who didn't get started with computers until 1983 is pretty new at it. I was dealing with Microsoft before IBM introduced their first PC, and while I agree with Bill Palmer that you should use a Microsoft product only if there is absolutely no other choice, I would suggest that most people's definition of the "goshawfullest piece of junk to come out of Microsoft" is probably whatever they have most recently tried to use.

Hello out there.
Here is my solution for the storing system and maybe some of you get an idea from it. Maybe I am writing too much but ok…here we go: I have been in Magic for 30 years, just as a hobby, so it’s natural that you get a lot of props. Well, I collect coin sets, fake coins, packet tricks, trick decks, wallets and so on. Usually props for close up. You cannot use all props at the same time, so you have to store some of them. I used to have my props in boxes and drawers and the instructions in some books and boxes, yes everywhere. I hate to look for something I know I have but cannot find. So several years ago I came up with a simple storage system which is practical and easy to use. I use the excel program on my computer as a database. Each sheet has its own subject (cards, coins, ESP etc.) and each subject has its own serial number, (from 100 for card, from 300 for coins etc.) this is for the storing part, each subject stay together in the bookshelf. I put in the name of the trick, short description (a few words) inventor (maven, trost, and etc.) and type of trick (packet trick, jumbo card, flipper coin, trick deck etc.) A little discipline makes it easy for the search function on the computer to find it. All new tricks go in this way. Well, that’s the digital part of the system. For storing I use A5 size (half of a normal sheet) envelopes standing in the bookshelf. Because of the serial numbers, all cards, coins etc. stay together. Every envelope has a number, name and a short description. The description is only for me. (How was that again?) Every envelope contains the description and the prop. Using search on my computer, I can easily find my tricks, coins, fake cards, packet tricks or what I want by its serial number. And that’s the storage part of it. And here comes the best part of it – in my opinion. I read glossy magazines, magazines on net, books, internet forums, got ideas and so on. This is how I think: I have that prop (wallet, fake card etc.) and this routine is good, I have to remember it. Or: here is a new packet trick and I have those cards in my fake card deck. Or: I got an idea and must remember it. Well you all know what I mean. What really happens after a while is, I forget the whole thing and nothing happens. I look in the same book/magazine two years later and think: I’ve never tried this. And here is what happens now: New routine for the wallet in the magazine – copy it and put it in the wallet envelope. Somebody on the forum have an idea for a prop you have – press the print button and put in the correct envelope. New packet trick in a magazine – copy it, make a new envelope in your system and store it. New moves for a prop in a book – copy it and put in the envelope. You got an idea – write it on a piece of paper and drop it in the envelope. You use some cards/coins from different tricks – write some words about it and put it in the envelope. When you have time, pick up an envelope and take a look inside, perhaps you will be surprised of what you find. A new routine or move for the old prop could make it as new again. Well, that is how I do it. As in magic -”make it simple”- and it will work. Torstein |

I'm looking at OneNote for cue sheets and organizing my magic. Anyone else using this? You can make audio and/or video notes as well and stick it right into your cues, etc., along with photos. So basically,
Magic Notebook >Closeup >>Closeup Set 1 >>>Routine 1 >>>Routine 2 >>>Routine 3 >>>Routine 4 >Standup >>Routine 1 >>Routine 2 >>Routine 3 Anyone else using OneNote or doing anything like this?
Magically yours,

I too would really much like to see some kind of example of an exel sheet. I don't really understand how you use it.

I use excel to catalogue my magic DVD colltection over 350 DVDs. I can sort the DVDs by type (close-up, comedy, stand-up, etc.), or by magician, or by, alphabetical order. I find it very useful and easy to use.

Looking at this whole discussion, it makes me think that some people have way too much time on their hands.
Terry Seabrooke uses the same system I do to catalogue the bulk of his material. (other than the cups and balls museum, since that's for people to learn from!) This is called the "Pilot" system. You take a bunch of card tricks and you "pilot" over there. Then you take a box of coin tricks and "pilot" somewhere else. Seriously, when it comes to my performing material and my reference material, I am far more concerned with the 30 minute segments that constitute my standup show, my extended show and my big show.

Bill,
Now I feel better organized. I pile stuff in Rubbermaid boxes. Some have meaningful labels like "wands", "eggs", "Flash paper and powder", "balloons", etc. Others have labels like "Where does this go?", "Instructions?", "Card Things", and "Parts and Gimmicks". Often I can find what I am seeking! Other times I just buy another one to misplace later. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander PS --- I really need to have a "Magic by the Pound" sale. |

Similar to Bill's "Pilot" method I use the "Disco" system. Disco here and Disco go there!

I put my props in various storage boxes I have collected over the years. Some are simple 3 drawer plastic boxes you can get from Target or any stationary store. But the important part for me is to put some kind of number lable on it and hen describe he contents. For example, Box #1 drawer 3, Invisible deck.
All this infor can go on Excel or a list on Word or any document you wish. |

If you're organizing the things that you hoard (props, dvds, books) then Excel is a fine idea.
If you're organizing your act (bits, gags, lines, jokes, routines, callbacks, running gags, ideas, themes, show types, todo lists, openers, closers, etc.) and using it to get ideas down quickly before you forget them then the software I mentioned earlier in the thread has no equal. http://freemind.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page The beauty of it is not that you can get the info on the page, the beauty of it is that it's very fast and that you can move your ideas around, in and out of it, move things from web pages into it, and make lists very quickly and then find the organization later. Humans don't think like an outline or spreadsheet, we think in a much less organized way and this software allows for that to occur; get it down now, organize later. Here's a screenshow of how it looks.

I use Google Docs to organise my books and DVDs. I use their spreadsheet and the beauty is that I can access my list from anywhere there is an internet connection.

I would agree that using a database, while technically the right app, is probably overkill and Excel offers a lot of flexibility with regards to sorting and filtering in addition to its ease of use, by comparison.
I divided my Excel workbook into 4 worksheets (shown in caps): TRICKS & ROUTINES (column headings -- admittedly some columns may be a little overkill here...) Effect/Routine Name DVD/Book Source Rating (5=Best) Competence (5=Best) Public Performance Dates Walk-thru Notes (cheat sheets to refresh myself) Category (cards, coins, etc.) In the Hands Packet Trick (or gaff deck) Prop Gimmick May Be Examined (before, after, limited) Length of Routine Audience Participation “Talking” Risk Materials & Setup Description Method & Presentation Patter Ideas GO BAG I list not only the items I would more likely take with me but also the effects I would perform with them. ADDITIONAL ITEMS TO CONSIDER This is just to track my wish list of items I would consider buying to add to my arsenal. MOVES Here, I list different Counts I have learned and some of the effects I perform that utilize that handling as a handy reference when I want to practice a particular one. |

I'd love to have my files available online, but I have a huge folder of them. Does Google, Yahoo or any of the other big names allow entire folders to be saved? It would take too long to save individual files.
