1 spring trap is a stunt
3 spring traps in the hands of a master, like Doug Higley, is a routine walking blindfolded along a craggy beach at lowtide that has been strewn with animal traps is insane! buy Doug Higley's "Traps-a-monte-mental" if you haven't already
Never criticize someone else until you have walked a mile in their shoes. Then, when you do criticize them, you will be a mile away from them and you will have their shoes.

Magicman1957...Just ONE of the Traps has been a puzzle for a long time...I hear ya...it seems however you twist it, it still comes out the same...which is really OK and has been for decades if you want to do a cool stunt.
The only other thing I came up with awhile back was to set it to capture a skunk which was set loose by 'mistake'. Of course it's the Spring skunk and it's me that gets caught...I know, I know...pretty lame.

Single Trap Ideas have been lacking for 40 years.
Blindfold. Lazy Susan. Bowl of Jello. Bowl of Ice Cream. Bowl of 1 Steel Trap. Give it a slow spin (so the stuff doesn't fly off) I guess there was a reason my Traps Routine was so well recieved...there just hasn't been much to do with the thing over 4 decades...and it IS such a cool prop...everybody WANTED something to do with them. I feel fortunate my brain worked that day. I think I mentioned it elsewhere but it was interesting that Abbott's not only sold a ton of Traps in Threes (3's) but also in 2's...'cause so many already had one and didn't know what to do with it! In my case I was in THAT boat but I also just happened to have 3 of them here...I had bought them awhile back with the intention of routining it but never thought of anything, mainly because of that pesky premise of presentiong a MACHO front...once I reversed that and went in the opposite direction it all came clear. What other ideas wait in the wings, blocked by a pre concieved notion of what it is SUPPOSED to be about? Think everybody...think...

Thanks everyone for the kind words!
I have over a dozen traps in various sizes, some really nasty, with teeth. I got them all on eBay. The collection wasn't exactly cheap, but as we learned over the last two summers, while you can't buy a color ad above the fold on the front page of the newspaper, you can earn one. This could also be a stage act at some point, but up here it I think it will work best as a publicity stunt. We are hoping that a lot of people will want to go to our big Fourth of July show after this. Have a look at our poster: http://www.ibmring362.org/all-star/poster2.html Yours, Paul |

Paul-Very cool poster...Rather Art Deco!
Does anyone know how long spring traps have been in use? I do a lot of "Time Period Sensitive" shows, and am trying to figure out if this is a prop/stunt I could use. Thanks, Gwyd |

Traps have been around 'forever' unless your time period is Ancient Greece...what IS your time period sensitivity? 1800's? 1500's?

For the upcoming shows this summer...1600 is the latest (Working the Ren Fest circuit), but I also do some 1800's period work. I was sure they were good for 1800's, but not sure how much before that.

The spring trap has a long lineage. According to Dannenfeldt (1982), spring traps for larger mammals such as fox and otter were first described in a 1590 book by an Englishman, LeonardMascall, who illustrated more than 30 mechanical devices. Mascall (1590) also described the use ofgalbanum (a plant) and the severed "privy parts of a female fox" as means of attracting red foxes tosnares or hunters. Mascall estimated that foxes killed 10,000 lambs, 20,000 poultry, and 40,000 rabbitsand conies, besides many fawns in England (Dannenfeldt 1982) - - - perhaps the first recorded predatordamage survey! Russell (1967) stated that the double-spring trap illustrated by Mascall was, ". . . quiteadvanced mechanically and rather belies the idea that it is in a beginning stage of development. As onestudies its parts, the notion is inescapable that many traps have preceded this one." He suggested that'such traps probably existed long before the 1500's.Russell (1967) further mentioned that the first steel traps were probably brought to the new worldby the very first colonists who settled in Nova Scotia, along the St. Lawrence River, and the AtlanticCoast and used them for controlling depredating animals and for acquiring furs. Such traps andvariations thereof were later made locally by blacksmiths for colonial use.

You can always use a time-warp approach. I heard a Renn Faire performer say, while getting onto a unicycle with a hobbyhorse head mounted on it, "These won't be invented for 400 years."

Everybody sold out...some weeks ago. The Abbott's Spring trap was not something that was a best seller...once my Routine became available the few that had been sitting on the shleves went quickly, Now Abbott's has weekly re-stocking so get on their list.
