Jason,
Thanks for the response! Now that would be a great deal @ $40-$50. I can't wait for the release. I know you were not speaking about my post but I don't think Steve mislead anyone. I don't own the book (I'm more interested in cards/poker) because spending 2 c-notes on something that only had minimal info on cards/poker seemed a little expensive. But, I DID KNOW that it wasn't a "how to" book just by reading his web-site and reading all the info here at the Café. From what I've heard/read Steve is a great guy. Thanks, SS

JasonEngland,
Sorry, don't misunderstand me...when I said "fool me once...." I was referring to the hype about the book being sold out, hard to get, etc. etc. The book was easy to get and is still available. It was made very clear that it was NOT a teaching book..so it was not mis-represented. And I did enjoy the read ! Now, I am a little concerned that the new poker book will be more generally available to the public. That usually means that the good information is filtered out .....sigh. Time will tell...I don't want to speculate....Steve has done a good job in the past !

But like N-Strippers, some things are best left unwritten. As for Forte, the guy and his book are the most un-hyped pair in gambling. He doesn't talk about himself, WE do! To call anything to do with Forte "hype" just comes across as uninformed, the guy personifies the real goods. |

I have Steve's Casino Gaming Protection book and have been saving it for when illness in the family has resolved. This is now the case and I am just beginning to tuck into Steve's excellent tome. It is a large beautiful looking thing and clearly written from the bits I have dipped into. I have also just received the Genii magazine with R Paul Wilsons article on Steve. This is an awesome read. There is a fascinating subtext interview with Bill Malone in which he mentions Steve's encyclopedic knowledge of over 50 different ways of switching cards in and out of a game. This is probably just the tip of the iceberg. So with Steve's extensive and probably unique knowledge of gambling sleight of hand, will there be anyway of preserving this kind of knowledge? The answer is 'probably not' which would be a great shame. Still, this new poker book sounds wonderful. Jason, thanks for the 'heads up'. Can't wait.

Don't even think of using this stuff in a casino.....first of all, Steve's books are not teaching books. While they do explain a lot conceptually, they do not give you the mechanics of moves so you can execute them.
His tapes are better because you can see a move in action....but, even those do not break moves down to learn. However, his books and videos ARE very useful for experienced people who already know the techniques and want to read about fine points. Bear in mind that Steve says that his books were written FOR casinos so they can protect their games better. The books educate casinos what to look out for vs. teaching how to cheat. I personally own both his books and tapes...and I love watching a true expert at work In addition, the casinos know everything in the book, plus more....and getting caught in a casino is a federal offense ... not a mistamena. If you get caught, a fellow cell mate may want to know more about your bottom than you are willing to expose. (Of course I meant a "Bottom deal" !)

Expertmagician,
What is a mistamena? What federal law are you charged with when you get caught in a casino? |

Ronfour,
It would help if I could spell Felonies & Misdemeanors I am not sure of the technical differences...But, I do know that a felony is worse and you go to federal prison. I did a search and here is one example.....they were charged with "CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT RACKETEERING, MONEY LAUNDERING, AND RELATED OFFENSES": http://sandiego.fbi.gov/dojpressrel/pressrel07/sd052407.htm 20 years max. sentence does not sound like fun....But, you will have plenty of time to perfect your sleights.

MrZ: magician8 probably spent a good portion of his weekend using the search feature. Apparently he also felt obligated to let us know what his next purchases would be
Both of Forte's book are great sources of information. But thinking that a lot of the material would still fly undetected in a casino probably means you didn't read or understood the book. |

I was told once that even stealing a one dollar chip in a casino could bring federal charges. But I'd have to check and see if that is true. If your indicted by a Federal Grand Jury,(as were the people in the article that Expertmagician linked) that's a Federal offense.

I live in the great white north and the laws here are not as hard as the US for such offences... I think that's why theres a lot more scams being attempted here than in the states...and just because certain methods are published, doesn't mean it wont fly by anymore...

Please cite the federal law about cheating in a casino.

Guys,
Whether a crime is a "federal offense" or not depends on many things. Most "common" crimes like rape, arson, armed robbery, and murder are usually state crimes. You go to state prison if you commit those crimes, are caught and convicted. You can be charged with murder under federal statutes (like killing someone on a Naval vessel at sea, or if you killed a federal judge or someone with a similar federal office). Other factors include the crime itself. Stealing a dollar in a casino is a state crime. Passing a counterfeit dollar in a casino is usually a federal crime. Why? Because the statue you violated when you passed a counterfeit dollar is a federal statute. Having said this, most cheating statues are at the state level. Cheating at blackjack or craps in and of itself is unlikely to bring federal heat. (There are no federal statutes being violated by switching dice or cards.) However, if there are 20 of you, and you've been switching cards in 8 different states and not reporting any of this "income" to the IRS, then obviously you can expect federal charges under RICO (several people involved in "pattern of behavior" type crimes over a period of time) and from the IRS. So while cheating in a casino in a small-time capacity isn't usually a federal offense, it can be elevated to a federal offense under the proper circumstances. Jason
