I am curious what gimicks or tricks are out there which are entirely undetectable and believable. I'm looking for something that just makes a person wonder if psychic powers might be real, rather than proving that they exist.

The performer does that, not the tricks.
I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end...

I would say presentation is more important. It doesn't matter how good/undetectable the gimmick/effect is if the presentation is poor no one will believe it.
You were born original... Don't die a copy

What a strange and broad question.

Waldo,
I think I understand the intent of your question. The answer is as others have alluded to that presentation is what builds the belief of the spectators. However certain types of effects can be more suited to a presentation played out as 'real ability' as opposed to 'magic' and this is what you were asking. It comes down to context of performance - what does your audience expect you to do and what kind of character are they expecting you to be? For example: You will have a hard time being convincing as 'real' if you are booked as a 'magician' for a kids Christmas show. However if people have been told you are being studied by universities as someone who exhibits paranormal abilities and then during performance you use appropriate suggestion techniques to build on this image, you might just come across as 'real' to some folk. The most 'believable' kinds of abilities that people sometimes think might be real include: graphology (handwriting analysis), mathematical genius, memory genius, remote viewing, clairvoyance, clairaudience, clairsentience, telempathy, levitation and PK (bending, movement of objects). As always the work of Kenton Knepper, Luke Jermay, Ford Kross, Chan Canasta and many others who tread close to the blurred line of reality will help understand how to be this kind of performer. In summary - it is nothing to do with the 'tricks or effects'. Create your image and persona as a performer if you want people to wonder if you are 'real'. Most of the people who have been successful at this kind of performing also specialise in one particular ability and base their reputation around this. Cheers, Al

Waldo:
Just to add to Al's outstanding advice, your question regarding the gimmicks or tricks will be answered as an outgrowth of the persona that you choose. You will be led to the "right" effects for you, and in turn, to the methods that will make your character comfortable, by the role you've chosen. The details will unfold and be revealed to you as long as you have a clear vision of the way you wish to present yourself to your audience. It will all "come together" for you - you will gravitate to the gaffs, ploys and misdirection which will blend in with the performance style you'll choose, and which will in turn serve to make your methods indetectible (as you were asking). Hope that helps. Arnon |

I have realised that in my laser guided banana balloon popping routine, people think the balloon was popped by the laser...
This is possible but a powerful enough laser would cost a lot of money and be rather dangerous. Anyway this is a different kind of believability as it is something which falls within the standard realm of possibilities... Funnily enough because of this I am thinking of losing the laser... Corona |

I think he needs a set of blue d'lites because everyone has seen the red ones so the blue ones must be real magic.
