I'm only just starting out, but a friend suggested I buy 'Card College' by Roberto Giobbi, to help me out through my early years and beyond. for anyone else interested in card magic, then I would also like to HIGLHY RECOMMEND this book. It has really helped me get to grips with the fundamentals, which are of course of high importance...
I wouldnt skip the first few chapters (the boring bit) otherwise you will be completly confused and baffled, I soon picked up the basics within days and you can to. I would be most interested and much appreciate to hear if anyone on the forum has used this book themselves and what they have to say about? perhaps you find it invaluable? or maybe everything you know is based around the book. Also, as you can tell from my name, my man (not literally, I wish!) is S.W Erdanse.... any suggestions as to when I'll be ready to learn some of his works, or do I have to embark on rather a very long magical learning journey before I can even consider it? many thanks! blessings Little Miss Erdnase |

Hi again! After introducing myself in the 'New Arrivals' section of the site, and suggesting that you posted over here, I found that you already had! So sorry about that!
Card College eh? The word that springs to mind is... "BIBLE".... because that is what it is. The sleights and moves are invaluable, and they are taught better in this work than in any other of its kind. The effects contained in there are not my personal style (however I have used many as a basis for adaptation and invention and the majority of my professional close up act is based on stuff within those pages). The theory in Volume Two is quite heavy handed but invaluable. If you can take the time to read through it slowly and digest it all, it is worth its weight in gold. Volume 5 however did not live up to the standard of the other Four. In the 'With Thanks To' section of my own book (Close Up Theatre) I thank Mr. giobbi for Card College, the book that started it all - because that is what it did for me. It gave me the awkward push to learn more, do more and be more about magic, and you could not have selected a better series to start with. Good Luck with it all! Incidentally, I am offering Close Up Theatre as a FREE E-BOOK at the moment, it is a book of performance THEORY, and should you wish for something a little easier to digest than that in Card College 2 feel free to PM me and I will forward you a copy by email. All the Best Liam Gilbert

Erdnase? Why would you want to?Just carry on with the Card College series and you will have all the card skills you need(unless gambling tickles your fancy). To me EatCT was a real dissapointment. The effects aren't that great and explainations are always that clear. With the exception of color changes ,I really found this 'classic' quite boring!Card College was something else. The fact that a lot of people said that these books were better than Royal Road to Card Magic, enraged me.
RRTCM was really one of the best beginner books on card magic that I had ever read. So I decided to see what all the fuss about CC was all about.Boy,was I amazed. The people were right! It was better than RRTCM.The drawings were clear, as were the explainations-although I have to say that I read RRTCM when I was 8,for the first time and even then I could understand it. Card College is a great series-get 'em all. AJ |

Thankly for you kind words liam, and Andre.
Erdnase, why would I want to? I guess the reason being beause a mutual friend of mine, has Erdnase for his favourite example, and seeing this person do these phenominal tricks that he'd learnt from books such as EATCT, I always see them with a breathtaking 'wow' fator, which in turn makes me think 'i must learn that!' but am I seeing him as Erdnase's style, or his own? If his own, then I think I may have a passion and adoration for the other person, perhaps my feelings for Erdnase have been misdirected.... perhaps not! are we allowed to have more than one favourite magician? because I now have three! ;-) |

Liam, I would be interested to hear, why you think that. |

Hi again Uli
My reasoning behind that comment is a lot more in depth/complex than it appears from that blunt/brusque dismissal of volume five. As 5 is a collection of EFFECTS rather than of SLEIGHTS/MOVES/THEORY it begins to rely much more upon personal style and preference than necessary fundamental knowledge that every magician should possess, and I have to say that I did not find ONE effect in Volume 5 that I use in my act. So with this in mind, I suppose that my comment should read "Volume Five WAS NOT AS USEFUL TO ME as the other four" rather than stating that it simply wasn't as good. I hope this is clarified Best Liam Gilbert

From this book I'm trying a trick that I saw Taylor perform in Trev stones shop the other day, (i may add that Taylor actually got this trick from MY card college book, since I've been on here raving on about it everyone wants to borrow it!)and it's called 'The red black location- with a Royale Flush Finale', it's very impressive, try it if you dare!

When I first began learning magic with cards there was not that much available. Expert at the Card Table was still in some ways a prime resource. But, imagine that you go to school and you pull out your history text and it forthrightly sets forth the proposition that the earth is in fact flat. You'd think, woo, this book is just a tad behind the times! And, that is much the case with Erdnase. The world has passed it by and that's ok. It's not a slam, it just is the way that it is. There are simply much better books available now with much clearer explanations, illustrations, etc. If you just have to have it I would suggest the Ortiz volume although it is much more money than a basic Expert at the Card Table.
Card College by Giobbi is by far the best thing in book form. A remarkable work of both scholarship and writing and will probably remain the number one go to text on cards for the forseeable future. Best,
Brad Burt

Hi, I had a quick look at this set before but opted for the Complete Card Magic with Gerry Griffin (7 DVDs). I am not saying this is any better but for me a visual DVD / Video based learning tool is better, everyone differs but just thought I would let you know about this one.
Magic is amazing. One of the best parts of my life.
