Welcome to the Magic Café Julian. I am enjoying your CDs on viral marketing right now. I had to upgrade my car stereo to a Cd player for them. They are so packed with information I am going to have to listen again as soon as I finish the first pass.Great job!

On this subject - I have an educational reading show that I'll be performing at schools and libraries in a few months. I have a bookmark giveaway, I wasn't going to go so far as to include "available for your party!" etc, but I have got my birthday party website listed as it's part of my logo.
Do you think this is the way to go Donald? |

My bookmark giveaways have my website listed on it (along with some of my photos, my name, and phone number), although my website hits to a lot of different markets. Once you get to the home page, you have a choice of directions, such as events, birthdays, schools, churches and Christmas parties.
I think your bookmark should be fine as a giveaway, and your thinking is right on track. It is more of a subtle promotion thing. If you want to do bold promotion in the show, then promote your other types of school shows, etc. to the staff and students. - Donald P.S. I never said this outright, but even though I don't promote my birthday shows during my school show, I have had birthday shows as a result of doing school shows. I just booked one yesterday, because of a bookmark given at a "Reading" school show back in November. The birthday girl wants Donald Dunphy the magician at her party, because she saw me at her school and liked me / my show. That's the power of a good show and a good souvenir!

I am a firm believer that if you are going to go through the trouble and expense of printing a give-away you would be foolish not to include your contact information. At the very least it should contain your web site. If you don't feel comfortable, you can always included it like a copy right notice. Example:
(C) 2006 http://www.JulianSpeaks.com This is all it takes to direct them to your site. I do not promote private engagements (such as birthdays) when performing at school shows, but, like Donald, I have gotten more than a few from kids who took home my give-away, read the copy right notice and looked up my web site (which says NOTHING about birthdays) and they called anyway. By this time of course, they are almost completely IN-sensitive to price. Just one more example about how to stimulate, and actually CONTROL the word of mouth message that gets spread about you. This is one of hundreds of ideas mention in "Viral Marketing". --Julian Franklin |

I've chosen to leave the largest part of my marketing to word-of-mouth. I find my website is the perfect marketing tool, though it's still very basic. Even so, it amazes me how often I'm complimented on my website, which is the only reason I haven't upgraded it yet. I work regularly for several schools, both nursery and primary, most of the original contacts were through birthday party bookings for kids at the school. They talk about me at school, tell the teachers, and the teachers decide to book me for special occasions. Or one of the teachers from the school sees my birthday show, that kind of thing. It gets like the kids are my pals, I'll see them at various birthday parties through the year, and also for a summer fete, and their Christmas party.
Because I'm getting the bookings in this way, there is no conflict between my roles as a birthday party peformer and a school show performer. However, I don't currently sell an "educational" show. Captain Kid, as you're a pirate like me, you'd surely have success with an educational pirate show? I've thought about it myself, it's quite a fun prospect, and learning about pirates is something kids love to do. It seems to me that if and when I decided to properly aim for the schools market, I'd want that kind of educational pirate show, rather than the purely entertainment slant my shows currently have. Then, I'd strategically market that specific show to schools, one area at a time, to try to get blocks of bookings. I'd be interested to know how your school show differs from your birthday shows? |
