I think its risky to take up pre-orders for books, dvds and what have you
I havent seen a book yet shiped out on the day it was scheduled to be ready And I have pre-orded quite a few But I can live with that Peo

The only book I've ever pre-ordered ("the Conjuring Anthology" by Jim Steinmeyer) shipped right on schedule.

Richard Kaufman just posted this over at the Genii Forum...
"I just want to give everyone an update on what's going on with The Vernon Touch book. We got everything to the printer on time and, despite their promise of a May 14th delivery date, problems with both the dustjacket and text have caused delays. At this point the book has actually been printed, but I've rejected the job since it isn't up to par. I hope they will get the problems sorted out and get it reprinted shortly. Feel free to post this note on other Forums--it'll save a lot of individual e-mails and phone calls from customers asking where it is!" -Jim

I believe the delivery date has been changed to 7 June 2006?
Its not too long a wait for a quality production. Is there going to be an increase in price once its preorders are over?

Thanks Joe, according to the webside, I think there was a delay and will only be shipped on 7 Jun. I think I will wait for it to be actually there before ordering, since there is no price change.
This is a must have Thanks!

Sorry to appear dense, but is this book going to contain effects?
or is it more 'ramblings' and essays? I'm well aware of Dai Vernons contribution to magic, but I'm less aware of his contributions to Genii... |

Michel Close has a review in the latest issue of Genii about The Vernon Touch, and according to him effects are at a minimum.

I think this book will be more about the life of a legend in the field of magic. For his effects, you can get the Vernon Chronicles series or his Vernon Revelation DVDs.
Cheers!

Vernon's focus when writing the column was on his recollections of past magicians, opinions on current magicians, and his thoughts and theories on magic. Basically, whatever he felt like talking about at the time the column was due. Separate from this, David Ben is, in fact, working on a biography of Vernon which will get into the details of his life. -Jim

I thought I would give Café readers an update on the Vernon Touch book.
First, the book contains about six effects (could be a few more or less), some of which did not work correctly when first published. Gary Plants has gone through these and cleaned them up so they work fine now. Second, I have been a customer at the particular printer I am using for 29 years and in all that time I have never seen a book as badly printed as our Vernon Touch. We have many photographs of Vernon that have never been published before and they're beautiful, but they look like crap after being printed. So, I am currently involved in a tussle with the printer over how to get it fixed and who's going to pay for it. Third, there will be no price increase: the book is $69 and will remain so. Fourth, Jim Steinmeyer never advertises his books until the final product, ready to ship, actually shows up at his home. Unfortunately the high cost of printing does not afford all of us this same luxury and we must sell copies in advance in order to pay the printing bill (which is tens of thousands of dollars). A delay of even a full month is not unusual and should not cause a hubub. |
