I was wondering if anyone else besides myself has been using the Da Vinci Booktest?? I think this is one of the best booktest to use, especially at the moment because of the books popularity. For those of you who have this booktest, what do you think of it and how has your audience reacted to it? This is one of the very few gimmicked booktest that I use, however, because of the books huge popularity, I thought it was very well suited. Thanks in advance for all replies.

Hi,
I saw this on trickshop.com too. Is the one your refering to described below? Da Vinci Code Impromptu Book Test At last, the world's hottest book can now be one of your hottest mentalism effects. A phrase on a randomly selected page in "The Da Vinci Code" is revealed by a prediction; encrypted with an ancient cipher. What’s more, aside from a prediction slip encoded using the ancient cipher discussed in the book and an easy-to-use decryption key (we supply ready-to-print artwork for both), everything else you need to perform this effect can be borrowed...paper, pens, the book and a deck of cards. There are absolutely no gimmicks or advance preparation required, and you finish completely clean! How many other Book Tests can stand up to those claims? With the release of the film version of "The Da Vinci Code" starring Tom Hanks, there are few topics hotter or more topical than this one. Just two easy, fully-explained moves accomplish everything. Concise copy, including patter suggestions, along with large, clear color photos take you step-by-step through this easy-to-learn, yet powerful routine. Supplied complete with ready-to-print artwork. Whether you're a magician or mentalist, this is one Book Test you can't afford not to learn. 15 pp. Da Vinci Code Impromptu Book Test Introductory Download Price: $4.95 |

Sounds like an interesting and timely piece of booktest to incoporate into one's mentalism act. For the price, I will have to find it out myself.

Kyle:
IMHO, the ad states very little about the effect. The mention of a deck of cards makes me wonder if the "phrase on a randomly selected page" comes as a result of using the deck to chose a page, line number and number of word in that line (or some such gymnastics). Can you give us a better description of the effect? And why the use of a deck of cards? Terry

Hi,
I just bought the effect and read through it. Personally, I think that it is not really different from any other booktests. I think that the cards are optional. I personally would not use the cards. It is actually a good idea, utilizing the popular Da Vinci Code, but method-wise, I am a bit disasspointed. But for under $5, I did not really expect much. You get some nicely designed Da Vinci Code Ciper Key, and Prediction Note, that you can print out. I still think it's a good deal. For me I would probably use other impromptu booktests like Hoy, Marc Paul's AAA, Patrik Kuffs, etc. |

It sounds like it uses both a deck of cards and some sort of decoder. I know nothing about the test, but it sounds kind of convoluted. Why not do one of the following:
AAA booktest with Da Vinci Code Hoy with Da Vinci Code Any standard page force with Da Vinci Code Ranging page force with Da Vinci Code Thanks, Elliott |

I suppose you can use the Hoy Test - give your spec the Da Vinci Code book and in your hand is the Angels and Demons book. Both are authored by Dan Brown so it's logical.

Yup, that sounds fine good
I personally am not a fan of using cards. I remember there's a magazine force in osterlind's dvds, which is pretty good too. Well, I'm sure there's lots of ways |

Come of think of it, hard cover books like the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons may not be a good choice to use a Hoy Test...

I actually got the Da Vinci Code book and the Secrets of the Code book, both soft cover.
One book actually explains the other, so I think it's pretty easy to come up with some pretty good patter |

Actually, one of the good things with using a code is you can actually put the prediction wide open in front of the spectator.
You don't have to keep it with you or in an envelope. I actually just performed this to someone who's a Da Vinci Code fan. I developed a patter about the possibility of secrets code hidden in these books. Even going as far as pages and words might actually hide some secrets. And so on.... I put the ciphered prediction right in front of her before I even started doing the trick. So she is staring directly at the prediction all this time. And I got really good reactions as she thought it was totally impossible because she was staring right at the code. She have seen similar routines with predictions shown AFTER the spectator reveals her word. She might think that there's something fishy with the envelop or something. But for this one, the prediction is shown BEFORE the spectator even reveals her word. So all in all, I think it's not a bad idea to actually code the prediction |

So the openly displayed prediction is decoded . . .
That’s pretty cool. If you have a couple hundred pockets (or a REALLY big index wallet), you can let the spectator pick any page of the book |

Can anyone describe how the page is selected without exposing the method. To me, that is a critical part of the effect. And once again, why the cards?

Wow, I'm actually liking this effect more now.
In typical booktests, we let the spectator 'randomly' select a word, then BOOM we show them our prediction. And that's it. But in this version, the spectator actually decodes the prediction one letter by one letter. This adds a lot of excitement and suspense to the revelation. It goes like: Letter 1 - "ok..." Letter 2 - "um..." Letter 3 - "wait..." Letter 4 - "What the..." Letter 5 - "Oh my god! Don't tell me...." Letter 6 - "Holy... This is impossible!" And so on. You get the pictures I actually find this to enhance the audience experience. In a group settings, other spectators will also move close and look, as they are also excited to see whether or not the revelation is correct. And everyone actually experiences the suspense as the prediction is revealed word by word. I'm starting to see possibilities here. Maybe applied to booktests in general |

Hi ElliotB,
Yes the prediction is coded. And personally, I don't think we really needed to let the spectator randomly select a page. I did the Hoy Test, and it seemed very random to the spectator |

Hi Terry,
The method of selecting the page is nothing new. I'm sure it has been used or published before. In fact I think the method that comes with the ebook is rather week. Personally I would prefer other methods by Osterlind, Patrik Kuffs, Marc Paul, or Hoy. So if you are looking for a groundbreaking method, you will be disappointed. I was actually quite disappointed when I bought the ebook too. I thought the method of choosing the page is rather week. But when I did it to a spectator, it turned out that the Open display of the prection and the Revelation are the strong points. And the reactions were better than other book tests I have done. And I am pretty sure that this will be more effective to Da Vinci Code fans, as they truly enjoy the suspense. Hope this helps |
