George,
Your right I have lots of fun but I do get frustrated at times, that's where the cursing comes from. Right now I am building (or trying to) a smoke chamber. I get angry sometimes because I know I could do much better work with real tools, but hey, you work with what you have until you can upgrade... I'm in a lot better mood lately, because I only work an hour or two per day on something. Before I would do 5 or 6 hours and not get as much done... I will post a bunch of pics of my self made illusions soon, in the meantime here George, here is a few pictures of my self built tip over trunk recently in action at my local sam's stage magic contest... http://www.subcultureproductions.com/tip1.jpg http://www.subcultureproductions.com/tip2.jpg Those are my kind of bunnies I have to haxsaw the ends of those bolts, never realized they stuck out so much till I saw the picture. The trunk breaks down to 3 pieces for easier transport... I guess a my jigsaw does get the job done for some stuff... Steven |

That's a great looking trunk, Steven... but is the base actually bending from the weight of those bunnies? I'd reinforce it more, just in case.
Good thinking making it in three parts- but don't hacksaw those bolts. It'll destroy the threads and they won't go through the nuts anymore. Just buy shorter bolts to replace them. Also, if you upgrade the trunk sometime, you might want to consider industrial-grade locking casters, which will let you move it on and off stage, even at full performance weight. Another suggestion is to refinish the crate with a fabric cover, which will get rid of the woodgrain look (and save you the time of repainting it if you want a different look at some point.)

Heya,
I think the angle of the picture may just make it look bowed, I just checked and its more than fine I think. Yes shorter bolts is a good idea. I'm fine with the woodgrain appearance for now, this trunk was built all from scrap wood so a beautiful perfect finish was not to be expected. Perhaps in the future I will cover it in fabric for a nicer look. All in all the trunk only cost me time and hardware (bolts, hinges, screws and nails) I did buy the legs and decorative pieces. The legs, they are fencetops turned upside down, I'm fine with no wheels looks more medevial and its actually pretty light in its component parts form. We have a dolly too... This trunk breaks down and can fit in a very small space. Oh and to stay on topic, this was all built with my favorite saw, a jigsaw It matches our subtrunk and a couple of other pieces I built so far. Steven |

I can't tell everyone again just how much I appreciate your help, and advice! I am at the point now where I can purchase a saw! Was going to last month, but then my car had an issue so the money went to that. I gotta get something quick, before anything else breaks down! Steven, I know what you mean about the jigsaw, as it has been my trusty friend ( well, most of the time) since I started building effects.
Michael, I went to your site (The Magic Company) and was definitely impressed! You opened my eyes to the fact that a smaller table saw would work fine! If I can find a good deal on one, I might also be able to get a small band-saw. For now that is the plan. To all the guys that voted for the radial arm saws, they definitely sound very versatile, but I better warm up with a table saw first, as it sounds a little safer. I would love to see some of the effects that everyone has built. It would be cool to have a forum where we could post pictures of stuff we have built, and are building. Michael

In the ancient saw category... I have and use a 30+ year old jig saw that has outlived two other newer saws. It is all metal, the entire saw, even the handle. Ah Craftsman is NOT what it once was!
Years ago the switch went on it, and this is one of the old craftsman power tools that still has a lifetime waranty- I was cautioned by a Sears guy NOT to have it sent in for repair as they would probably never send it back, just send a new one as replacement. I fixed the switch myself.
