Candles in all their various forms. The first "professional" trick I purchased after being completely baffled by same was the original (long b-4 Fantasio) vanishing candle sold under the name Atomic Candle. This was actually a child's toy called a Zoomerang that had been modified with a holder for a little birthday candle (wick) in the end. I still have it!

I remember the old "wax paper" Atomic Candle. What a cool trick it was. Years ago, for a very brief time, someone in Asia (can't remember if it was Japan,) made a wonderful vanishing "Boombox," similar to the Vienna Vanishing Radio. What made the Asian one special is that it was on a crystal clear plexiglass table. Unfortunately, it was quite delicate and not particularly well made and they fell apart and didn't work reliably, but when it did, it was a miracle, similar to Christian Fechner's Vanishing TV, only on a smaller scale.

John, you are an ol' timer! The Zoomerangs of my youth are the Chinese Yo-Yo's of more recent years. I wonder what the polictially correct term is now?
(BTW the Atomic Candle looks much more realistic than the plastic ones.) |

Hey! I'm not THAT old! Well, maybe. But, yes, the Atomic candle did really look like a wax candle. The "silks, pull and clear cylinder" type vanishes were always eye-poppers. I think U.F. Grant sold one many years ago as "Space Silks." I remember seeing Vic Torsberg actually demonstrate it at Ireland's on Dearborn in Chicago (pre-Magic, Inc.) Oops, I guess I just dated myself again!

Yep, Ireland's at 109 North Dearborn, the Treasure Chest, National Magic, the Round Table at Drakes Restaurant, the Magic Counter in Marshall Fields...what fun we used to have on those glorious Saturdays in the Loop!

The $3 Atomic Candle! I'd forgotten about that gem. I bought my silk pull and tube from Irelands, what a quick vanish of a silk between two others. Great. About that time I backed a silver dollar with some extra suit material and had an instant coin vanish that looked great from 5 feet away. Snap it over with the fingers and it was instantly gone. Reach up with the other hand and pick a coin out of the air, giving you plenty of ditch time.
Those were the tricks that taught you such terms as 'opening effect', etc. Squash from Abbotts. Astounding vanish of a shot glass full of whatever. I understand it was the trick that put Abbotts on the map.
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.
