There has been some good discussion on self-working tricks here lately so it's time for a bit of a challenge.
Can we come up with a good routine - say 2 or 3 sets of 3 tricks, that are all self working and would result in a routine that is entertaining and magical? Here is the kicker. The tricks must come from books that are easily and cheaply obtainable by a beginner. This means the Fulves self-working books, the many Bob Longe books, definitely Scarne on Cards: you know - the Borders and Barnes and Noble offerings. It would unfortunately preclude things like the Steve Beam books, DVD's and other books that contain self-working gems (Bannon, Aronson etc.) I know - I like this stuff a lot but it takes away from the challenge. This isn't just a mental exercise. A good routine could go a long way for a beginner to learn presentation and timing without worrying about sleights. The sleights will come as well as more advanced routines. In the meantime, the magic is happening. What do you think? - Jud Bond |

I'll suggest an opener then! "4 Way Coincidence" by Jerry Mentzer.

I'd like to add a bit to the challenge - how about including the 'chapter and verse' reference to any tricks, so that a beginner can actually FIND them and try them out?
For example, Roger, where can I find '4 Way Coincidence'?

"4 Way Coincidence" is on Geoff Williams's currently very popular DVD "Miracles for Mortals: Killer Magic for the Rest of Us," Volume 1. Mr. Williams credits his source on the DVD but I don't remember what that source is. It's also on Mark Elsdon's reecent DVD "Before I Forget" it's called "Pre-prefiguration" on that, but it is essentially the same trick. I find it a useful opener when all I have is a deck of cards. |

Addendum to the above: I found out elsewhere on the Café that 4-WAY COINCIDENCE is based on a routine by John Murray which can be found in "Card Cavalcade 3" by Jerry Mentzer. It is included on Geoff Williams's DVD with Jerry Mentzer's permission. I found this in one of the reviews of the DVD.
Posted: May 19, 2006 1:10pm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Still another thought (I'm bucking for whatever is above "Regular User" ): in Bob Longe's books, at the end of the book, he often gives sample routines combining the tricks he has taught in those books in an intelligent way. Other writers for beginners sometimes do the same. |

I think I've stated this somewhere else in the post, but I can't say enough good about Jim Steinmeyer's "Impuzzibilities" and "Futher Impuzzibilities". Another great resource for self-working principles and material is Harry Lorraine's "Mathematical Wizardry". I use the "Digital root/missing digit" principle for numerous number predictions and reveal them in different ways. I recommend them highly.

Bob Longe's "Easy Aces" always got me good reactions when I was beginning along with Presto Prediction also a Longe invention.

If I understood correctly, Jud ( I hope so ), You propose to combine some effects to perform a whole self working routine. Well, You could start with the trick of four Aces found on four heaps - sorry, I miss the name of this trick but I'm sure You all know it - then - saying something like "And now I'd like to show You another interesting peculiarity of Aces" - go on with "Traveling Aces" from Scarne's book ( pag. 13 ), to finish with "Follow the leader" ( Fulves' "Self working card tricks", pag 100 ), still using the Aces together with other two cards.
Due to the fact You are using the Aces in all of them, between second and third effect you could place a joke saying e.g. "I'm overworking them tonight, poor fellows" or a similar line. Nothing special, just my suggestion. |

To start off with I would go with Ultra Card Divination (Royal Road to Card Magic). Best to start off with since there is card counting involved.

That's exactly right.
Actually, the books "World's Best Card Tricks" and "Mystifying Card Tricks", both by Bob Longe, anre good sources. |

How about "Trait Secrets" from John Bannon's 'Dear Mr Fantasy' (pg. 182)?

Here's a routine I use. Not everything is exactly self-working but if I can do it anyone can probably do it.
Dead Reckoning - Dear Mr. Fantasy by John Bannon (large set-up so it's the opener) Gemini Twins - More Self-Working Card Tricks by Karl Fulves (high impact) Siamese Stab - Semi-Automatic Card Tricks by Steve Beam (good story) Split Deck - Purchased (obviously gimmacked deck - allows for deck substitution) Further Than That - Easy to Master Card Miracles #1 by Michael Ammar - credited to Steward James (good audience involvement - requires a set-up) Vacuum Cleaner Cards - Easy to Master Card Miracles # by Michael Ammar - credited to Paul Harris (Good patter possibilities - some sleights) Side Swiped by Simon Aronson (High impact - good climax) or Signed Card to Wallet using the pocket Mullica wallet (no palm card to wallet - good climax) What do you guys think?

This thread is over a year old but still very interesting. So far the only post I've read that actually meets all of the original criteria is from galeria. We can do better than one post, can't we? I would post something of my own but I don't have my books with me at the moment. I'll look them up and come up with a routine to post when I have the chance. In the meantime, I think galeria's idea is a good one.

Lazy Mans Card Trick
Untouched by Darryl or Scarne (but use the two mate cards of the final selections) Then Gemini Twins as a repeat coincidence trick to show you are magic and it wasn't a fluke. Then have spectator shuffle deck you take out mates of two force cards and do the cross cut force.top card and bottom card of deck. Finish with half deck Do As I do. |
