So I do card manips and have been recently learning them with gloves. It's about time I bought some better gloves for it though.
What material do you use? I have heard chamois leather is good, or if not very thin cotton? Any advice will be much appreciated. Paul |

I would bet that leather would make your hands sticky. This could be a real advantage or not. I have tried it with cotton gloves, but it didn't fit my character, so I dropped them. I would recommend getting cheaper versions of both and trying them out to see which one works better.

Next question, do you treat the thumb with something to help produce singles?

Actually, if you are wearing cotton you can just lick you thumb and index finger or dip them in water and it will work splendidly.

Many years ago I tried about a dozen different types of white gloves for my cards-and-doves act, and ended up up using heavy cotton parade gloves, the kind with the snap at the wrist. I seem to remember buying about half a dozen at a time. You're in the UK, so military uniform suppliers might be a good source.
On your second question, I never wet the fingertips: I didn't want to take a chance on the gloves grabbing the wrong card.

Very early in my career I did some manipulation with gloves. At first I used parade gloves make of cotton or polyester. Knowing that Cardini used chamois gloves I searched for such gloves with no success.
I did eventually find a white pair of Lambskin gloves with silk lining in the Formal Wear department at Saks Fifth Avenue, which I purchased for about $65.00 way back in 1982. They were pretty good for manipulations! A few years later I found a pair of black leather gloves from a Chinese street vendor in Manhattan for $6.00. These gloves were without any lining whatsoever and they looked just like formal gloves except they were Black. Because they fit tightly on my hands they really made card manipulations easy. Also at the time I was using Cardini's idea (from the 1920's before he did the "Drunk Act") of painting some of the backs of the cards Black in order to prevent them from flashing between the fingers during back palming. My point is that I've tried both fabric and leather gloves and there is no comparison. Leather is better because it is skin and its texture helps to grip the objects being manipulated. Best regards, Levent
