Myself, Nathan K. and Niva would like to get some thought on magic that solves everday problems. Some examples are Band De Solei to move unsightly tanlines, Self Tyeing Shoelace to help with that pesky untied shoe, etc..... What other ones can you add?
Now I know some will say "What is everyday stuff?" I say use your judgement... So lets see what we can come up with....

Ahhhh! Meaningful magic that's done for a reason?
Ideas only. If someone asks, or you need, change of a dollar, you fold the bill into quarters. The bill vanishes and there's are four Quarters in change. For smokers. The box opens and the cigarette rises and floats to your mouth. I know, been done right? "Heal and Sealed" comes to mind as does Cyril's hamburger trick. People have to feed themselves. Produce, use, vanish are combined effects that come to mind as something that would be used every day. The item could be a pen, necktie, a can of soda or whatever. Having things you need come to you instead of your going to them would be nice. |

Hey Jaz, Great stuff!!! And I don't think it matters if its been done before. Just listing effects and such that meet the criteria (more or less!!)

A good way to think about this is to create a list of things that can happen or go wrong.
Here is a short list of some things that can happen: A pencil lead breaks Someone forgets his or her wallet at lunch A pen dries out, or even worse brakes and the ink cartridge spills. You tear or snag your clothes Someone empties the bottle of Absolute. Spilt coffee Track mud on the floor Can't find the remote, car keys etc Someone cuts his or her finger Sideswipe the car in the parking space next to you. I always liked the broken pencil lead restoration. Luke Dancy and I talked about this years ago. Luke and I both came up with totally different methods but it was a great exercise. I published my version in magic magazine a couple of years back. I love the Healed and Sealed by Anders Moden. That is a great effect. Ray Kosby published a quick bit where you open the soda with a little fizz and splash and all. Then you rub it and it is restored/sealed again. What about actually healing yourself? You cut your finger or arm (by accident of course) and then with a little rub it clears right up. I think this would be perfect for Blaine or Angel. How about healing your car after a fender bender? Imagine getting out of the car walking over to the other persons vehicle and simply by putting your hands on the car the metal slowly re-shapes and the dent pops out! All the best, Kranzo

What's the old button trick where it has popped off and is replaced?
If they're your own... Broken eyeglasses. Broken tooth. Someone else... Healing someone elses wound would require a stooge IMO. Repairing a damaged car would be a good sized production. I like the list Nathan. |

I forget the name , but know the trick , Jaz. Tom Mullica has it on one of his impromptu magic videos.... Dang my bad memory...lol
How about producing a sandwich for a homeless guy? (surprisingly I have found that they like magic, too!!!)

How about hiding all the decks of cards in your house (or a friends house)before poker night and the producing a stack of them or vanishing them ala skip daniels.

Sticky situation..is that the name? I should know, I use the trick...anyway, after you are finished with your chewing gum, you simply magically reform the chewed wad into a fresh, dry stick, then with another pass of your fingers it is wrapped in a fresh wrapper.
Love it! Great topic!
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

Everyone needs a pen at times...A simple pen production is something for everyday use.
People are always asking for change, or have change on them, why not a quater in bottle, namely the Abyss, as that can be handed out and kept by the spectator, then they always have a quarter... And if you can't think of tricks out there, then just pay attention to everyday life...When you see a problem that pops up think to yourself "Now if I really did have magic powers, how could I do/fix this?" Then create an illusion for it. Best Wishes, Draco |

Someone wants change for a dollar, and you poke your pen through it to see of it is counterfeit....Someone uses a Post-It note, and you tear and restore one....

Color changing tie - if you went out to a nice party and your friend said it was a "black tie" event - so you change your tie from red to black.
Dollar to Hundred bill switch - for when you leave your wallet at home (like I did today at work!) Floating sunglasses, coin, remote control credit card... for when you just couldn't quite reach it - maybe you could describe an older gentleman who had a bad back, and relate the story of how you saw him just float the object up to his hand rather than bend down. Escape cuffs or thumb cuffs -- for when you get in trouble with the police. Actually, now that I think about it, you could take just about any card trick and turn it into a gambling type effect -- something you would have to do if you were out on the streets and needed some fast cash for something. Mind reading/telepathy - for when you drop and break your cell phone, but are stranded somewhere and in drastic need of help. Needle through arm/Knife through arm -- for when you were running and fell into a sharp object -- and you needed to give yourself quick magicial medical attention so you could make it to your next magic show! |

I saw Roco do a whole act "improvising" magic based on the need for the moment. It was at the Place room in the Magic Caslte. Some people liked it, others didn't care for it. I thought the idea was a good one. I'm not sure how well it was executed.
He basically would walk up and down the aisle looking for situations where magic might be needed. A girl with clear fingernails, he produces nail polish, and so on and so on. Miguel

The best trick I have ever seen of this sort is one by Tommy Wonder. I don't remember the name, but it's in his 1st tape of "Tricks of Wonder". I think it's in his books as well.
It's where he explaines that a muggler took his watch, ring, and all of his money.. and sent it to himself with an envelope and everything inside it. He then tears up the envelope, and shows that he still has the ring and watch on his hand, all of his money in the wallet! looks insane! Tomer |
