Hi there. Could anybody share their opinion about this book? The cover looks great, but what about the inside? What kind of card stuff is in there? Worth checking out for the money?
Thanks in advance. |

Hocus Pocus has a "Solomon's Mind" DVD with a listing of 13 effects, 10 of which are found in the book.

I have Solomon's Mind, and I must admit that I was somewhat disappointed when I began reading the effects and figured out that I needed a number of gaffed cards. I met Solomon at a lecture and bought the corresponding card sets, and I was pleasantly surprised.
My advice: I wouldn't purchase the book without the cards. |

I do not have this book, but I heard that is not worth to buy it.

If you have the gaffs, would you say the routines are good?

OK
Thanks a lot. After getting those negative opinions not only will I think twice but many more times and while I'm thinking I'll get something else instead. Like the Complete Walton stuff because I heard the books are cool, aren't they? |

I was also thinking of getting this and noticed several negative responses. Would anyone be kind enough to PM me what you didn't like about the book (besides having to purchase gaffs)?

I actually like the book very much. There's a lot of thought that's gone into each effect. Solomon is a contemporary of Simon Arronson - so if you like his stuff I'm confident you'll like Solomon's. A couple of the effects are very usable and worth the price of the book.
Try it. |

I do have this book and believe that it contains some very good effects. The very first effect in the book “Steinmeyer’s Nine Card Problem with Seven Cards” gets some of the best reactions of any effect that I perform. Not everything in the book requires gaffs. There are 42 effects described in the book, in a bookmark included with the text, there is a list of 9 effects that use specially printed cards. The reason that I purchased this book and the reason that I like it is that David Solomon is a contemporary of Simon Aronson and John Bannon, both of whose material and thinking I also really enjoy and use. “Solomon’s Mind” also contains some very interesting anecdotes about David’s interactions with Ed Marlo that provide useful insight and historical perspective into the Chicago “inner circle”. This book was published relatively recently, 1997, so perhaps those who do not like this book already use versions of many of the effects in the book that they had already learnt from another source? As a side note, the out of print David Solomon and Simon Aronson book “Sessions” sold for $95 recently on Ebay.

Not quite related, but I hear Kevin Kelly is in the process of writing a second book of Solomon's material.

Frankly, Solomon's Mind book I disappoint is yes, there required gaffed cards, and more disappointed is the gaffed you cannot create by your own. It needs special printed cards for performance and get the climax reaction.
I can say if you want to invest the Solomon's mind book, there is a high investment in it. But, I own this book though the contents inside some of the card effects are good! It seems a lot of people were disappointed because some of the tricks required gaffs. This was not an issue for me. A little less than half of the tricks require gaffs. All of them are available from Solomon. The most expensive one is $20, but some are as cheap as $5.
I wouldn't buy the gaffs before the book. Buy the book first, see if there's any gaffed tricks you like, and then spend the money on the ones you want, if any. Personally, I didn't find anything among the gaffed tricks, but found a couple among the ungaffed ones. It doesn't rank anywhere near my favorite books, but it's a good one nonetheless. |

"...if you get one good trick that you will USE, the book is a good investment..." and an excellent learning experience. (whoever thinks of specially printed/gaffed cards?)
