I have at home an 8 X 10 picture of Dai Vernon holding a coin in his right hand and a champagne glass in his left hand. The picture is inscribed in the top right "Best Wishes Dai Vernon". My question is, I have heard that there are many of these photo's out there and the signature is not genuine. Can anyone verify this?

Vernon's handwriting is unmistakable...sort of a 1920's architectural all caps printing style with some arty flourishes. I have a few notes and envelopes here that he sent me back in the 1970's but my scanner is not working.

Vernon was giving those photos away at his $1,000 farewell lecture tour back in 1975.

I attended his farewell lecture tour and got one signed to myself. The "Best Wishes, Dai Vernon" was printed on all the pictures. IF you asked him, he would add your name above it in person. So, unless someone went to the trouble of copying the photo, it is probably geniune but not personally autographed.

Thanks everyone for the info. Sounds like it is an official autographed photo then..

Mike,
So it is possibly legitimate then ? Rennie I'd say yes...quite possible. I forgot to mention what Torkova mentioned about the autograph. Mike |
