You know, I've been using this move for years, and it occurs to me, I have no idea what ATFUS stands for. Can someone enlighten me? (I mean, I figured out the etemology of "The Olram Subtlety" easily enough, but what, exactly, does ATFUS stand for, anway?)
Thanks

Rimbaud,
You'll find a sweet variation of this workhorse sleight in the recent June issue of Genii Magazine :O). It's called the "No Fuss" switch, and magician Jack Parker uses it within first rate routines! You can actually enjoy the switch, as Mr. Parker performs it, on his website: http://www.jacksdeck.com/28.html Pal Gene |

Thanks for the link. This is a very nice handling. I like it. I'll have to check out that column.

I came up with ATFDS (face down) for a trick I made up. Its the same thing but you flip each card face down before squaring it under packet.

Apparently, Kaufmann once wrote that Marlo had stolen ATFUS from Elmsley. Jon Racherbaumer also had some (not quite so strident) thoughts on the subject.
It seems clear though that Elmsley should have some form of recognition in the history of this sleight. Perhaps "Elmo's ATFUS"?

I like the term the Elmo ATFUS move!
Marlo did not -steal- it from Elmsley. Elmsley did create something similar but never perfected it. Marlo did. So Marlo perfected it but did not invent it. Elmsley invented (almost) it but never did anything with it. As someone who really loves card magic above any other form, it pangs me to say, Marlo is the king of creating some of the most USELESS moves in card magic. yea, you can make the arguement that with the invention of new moves, your imagination is the limit on how you can use it. Some of his moves, though creative, are useless. Then again, maybe I have no imagination. -A |

Read Pentagram Card Magic book (edited by Martin Breese) and you be the judge.
I think there are a few pioneers in this works and variations such as Jack Parker, Andi Gladwin, Jason Alford, Tomas Blomberg, etc. Best, Andrew Loh Check out my new card magic eBooks "The Magnificent Queens" & "Triple Charms" at: www.cardicianden.com My Cardician Den Blog: http://pasteboards.blogspot.com/ |

Mr. Hastings,
It is all a matter of style and preference. I can understand why you say that Marlo created some useless sleights, moves, utilities, etc. but I know for a fact that there are sleights that I think are useless that many others make useful. Again, it is a matter of style and preference. Best, Trini Montes

Elmo a card magician? Blagnastit, what will those Muppets think of next?
Next thing you'll know, someone here will suggest that people shouldn't be doing a pass during performances!

I don't really think anyone who witnesses an ATFUS move, even when superlatively executed, believes that no funny business has occurred.... just an opinion.

Mr. Rubiks,
You are right, it IS only your opinion. ATFUS fools MANY laymen and magicians as well. ATFUS is not as widely known as you may think. Trini

I think ATFUS is one of the fairest looking switches out there (properly executed of course!). Of course, the very fact that you're moving the cards around and you're a magician may lead the skeptical to the conclusion that "something" happened, but so what if you ask me.

I have some variation of this ATFUS move, PM me and I would be glad if we would be able to exchange some of the ideas in this move.

I'm with Mr Rubiks on this one - it always looks fishy because there is never a natural justification for handling the cards this way.

Yes, in Chris Kenner's TOOC (Kaufman and Co), it's written that Elmsley originally published a switch like this years before Marlo did. The key to a move like this is not to look at it as you do it. You're ostensibly just thumbing through the cards, it's not supposed to look like a chore or heavy handling in any way. David Regal performs this kind of action flawlessly on more than one occasion in his video series.
