Denis Behr, in his book "Handcrafted Card Magic" has an effect called 'Gray Matters' which uses a Gray Code.

He mentions sources including Reinhard Muller, Leo Boudreau and Alex Elmsley.

The correct technical term for what we magicians call the Gray Code is the "de Bruijn sequence." It has a lot of uses in card magic. For example, ordinary playing cards may be stacked so that their backs may be read as if they were marked. I devoted the better part of my book "Spirited Pasteboards" (1987) to this principle.
