Has anyone seen this? Does anyone have it? Has anyone performed it? It sounds perfect for a Halloween party show.

You would have given it a worse review? how? In my mind he said if you are the best performer around, you have a chance of making this an okay effect.

Why waste ones time turning another perfromers bowel movement into a thing of value?
Yes you have a chance of in some small way recouping the cash wasted on the thing. So I say we agree. Brad was just being nice I think. Jim

I have it and use it. A wooden toothpick is pushed through the center of a match box, a piece of paper is folded and balance atop the toothpick. (They look much like an umbrella) a clear glass is placed over this, preventing anything from touching any of these objects. You concentrate and the paper begins to spin, first slowly, then like a top.
The effect and impact on the audience can be devistating. I've done this at psychic fairs, and I cannot describe the impact it had. For me, this effect is gold. Yes, I read Brad's review, but we look at things with different eyes. One man's meat is another man's poison. Tony |

I don't have it, but I don't think it would work for me. It is a good thing that most of us don't perform the same stuff huh. I am glad that one man's meat is another man's poison, or else what would our art be?

At the risk of sounding inflammatory, the audience's expectations at a psychic fair and a mind reading show are different. Likewise, there are different expectations at a mind reading show, and a magic show. I have used something as hoary as blowing the cigarette across a table to sucessfully demonstrate PK to "psychics." These people WANT to believe. However, for a critical audience, I feel there is something lacking in this trick. (Yes, these are generalizations, but generalizations I think we can agree are based in fact.)

Problem with magicians -- one level thinking.
I have used Ted Leslie's piece for several years -- but asked myself why the paper moved -- as a pointer, indicator -- or just a trick. Nuff Said.

I bought this effect many years ago directly from Werry for 40 DM (35$). I´m not sure but I think Ted Lesley bought the rights of this trick after Werrys death. But anyhow, I performed this trick many times (no, never on psychic parties or fairs, we havn´t such things here in Germany). My audience was always lay people and it was a stunning effect for them. They liked it and when I see the reactions of the audience in demo videos (or in L&L dvd´s) , I think the German audience is generally much more critical then an American audience. Like any other trick, it´s a question of presentation if it´s a puzzle or a miracle.

My thoughts on the 'work' would be different if it was priced lower.
But I will also admit I have little love for PK effects. Jim H.O.a-X

Tony, do you think the impact of the effect was strengthened due to the context--performing it at a psychic fair? Is it common to find mentalism effects performed at psychic fairs? -Jim |

I have seen this effect performed, and if put in the right hands it can be a reputation builder much like key bending. I am fascinated with Telekentic effects and I know from experience that the laye public is also.
I agree with Tony... and I am glad that EVERYONE does not agree on what is good and bad in the Bizzare Wurld. It makes the genre much more interesting knowing that not ALL Bizzarists are doing the same thing.

There is an interesting variation of this effect in Lee Earle's SYZYGY. Check it out. Much cheaper, if you know what I mean?

The problem comes in the link in movement between the performer and the object. "It's got to have something to do with him moving his arms like that" is a phrase which I feel one does not want to hear. Now, some laypeople will go on to think about the trick and possibly eliminate the method, but MANY won't. And Ted - who I think is brilliant - fails to provide a work around for that situation - at least in the provided instructions.
But I think on TV, with the right camera angle and editing, it could look great. |

Brad:
You are exaggerating the arm movement. Presentation can explain any movement that you do. Plus the creative performer can take the method and utilize it in a different configuration with requires no hand or arm movement, or no hands or arms. I have done the effect and apparently caused the spinning to take place just by staring at it. (Yes, I was seated at the table.) Of all of the people who perform this and have posted, not one has said anything other than positive things. Greg did ask the "Why do we do it?" question, but said nothing bad about the effect. It is not for everybody, but then, what is? The creative performer can take this and create wonder. There is no right or wrong on this, it is all about likes and dislikes. If this effect sounds like it will fit you, it can be a very strong piece. If it does not sound like it will fit you, it can be an expensive puzzle. Tony |

Tony, any creative person can take any trick, completely re-work it, and turn it into something different and perhaps even wonderful. However, when someone sells something, ideally, that which they are selling should be judged as-is, on its own merits. As a reviewer, it is not my job to take a piece of junk, work with it for days, and turn it into a piece of gold. My job is to evaluate the product, as provided, at the price point, in relation to other items current and historical and offer what is hopefully an informed judgement.
For $100 I do not think one should have to re-work the item in order to make it a viable performance piece. Now, if someone were selling a PK toolkit, with a bunch of interesting gadgets for $40, that would be a different story. Take the subterfuge system. As presented, it received pretty terrible reviews (see Lovick, Magic and Pierce, MUM) however both commented that with work and creativity the product could be viable. But that was not how the item was originally sold. It was not sold as a toolkit, but a device to accomplish specific things. And in that regard, it failed. However, some people could turn it into a viable tool. Unfortunately, for the money you pay, that information/skill/ability is not included. So, it is always true that someone - with enough resources, time, and energy - can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, but should we - at $100 - have to do this? Perhaps Lesley has a way of making this piece glitter like gold. Unfortunately, he did not share that with the buyer in the instructions. I hope this better clarifies the way I must look at a product - from the point of view of a reviewer. |
