I believe it was a high-brow, snarky attempt to imply that the moderators of the Café pick and choose what we all get to read.
Getting back to the subject at hand... I think all of us have been making some good points regarding Criss' method of presenting magic on screen. We agree that the target audience is definitely the TV viewer, not the person standing there live. Some think its hurting magic, some think its promoting it. Banachek: since you seem to be part of Criss' entourage, how do *YOU* feel about the way he is presenting the art? |

I'm sure Banachek feels the same way about a meal ticket as anybody else would.

Don't put Banachek in a position like that. While we may have our opinions, we should never force anyone to share theirs, or try to influence them. He already mentioned that the audience seems to be enjoying the show, based on ratings, so let's leave it at that. Obviously Criss is doing something right to get those ratings...even if we disagree with the road he took to get them.
Randwill, I don't see this as a meal ticket, more of a chance to be part of history. We all know how long it's been since a magician last had a series in America. This may be, and probably is, a once in a lifetime opportunity, why pass it up? I hate these threads anymore because it just becomes an occasion to name call; "Angel is a cheater!" "You're all jealous of his success," Yadda yadda yadda. I don't think any one of us can truly speak for anyone else, so why not live by the age old adage: Agree to disagree. Recap: Angel is doing great things for magic, you don't have to agree with the methods he employs, not everyone who critiques him is jealous, Banachek was kind enough to post here, let's not jump all over him. Okay? Now let's move on with our day. Nick Fox |

I didn't mean to 'jump on' Banachek. I was just suggesting that ANYONE in the position of gaining national media exposure and a paycheck would be unlikely to say anything negative in public about the person who was providing them that opportunity. No mattter what their true feelings might be.

I noticed further back in the posts that people would like to see Chris Angel take his show onto the stage... That's where he started first. His Mindfreak show rand on Broadway for at least a year, if not more. Plus his first two network TV specials were partially taken form his stage show, with some of the street stuff thrown in. He's always been on the cutting edge... especially his sub trunk without a cloth handling. He uses a pyro to cover the switch.

A prediction....
In a year or 2 (or 3) when the Mindfreak series is not taping anylonger, and Criss goes out on tour, or has a Vegas show... Almost EVERYONE posting here IS GOING TO GO AND SEE IT, even the people who complain about his methods. Then, everyone is going to say: a. the show was great b. the show was good, but this or that..... c. the show sucked d. I want more Mindfreak episodes e. I could do better f. why doesn't Blaine have his own live show, it would be better e. copper-who Criss, thanks for what you are doing for magic. scott |

Of course we'd all go see a live MAGIC show and we'd have the right to express our opinion in it good or bad just like any other performer we see. It'd be up to him and his performance skills to win us or lose us......just like it was up to Mili Vinili to win or lose us. Please quit asking us magicians to be impressed with camera effects. We're not. ( most of us anyway ) We'll give Chris his chance on the stage. Copperfield used some camera work himself, got a big name and made it huge in tours. I suspect this is Chris's plan as well. When he tours.... I'll see him. If he sucks...I'll say so...If he's mediocre...I'll say so... and if he's great....I'll be the first on my feet! BUT!!!!! I won't be saying... " I wish there were more Mindfreak episodes." I'll get all my movie effects from ILM thanks. Best, Tim |

There is plenty of Magic that Criss performs without aid of cameras. It seems those who do not appreciate what goes into doing a weekly TV show can't get past some editing, audience reaction re-takes etc and give zero credit for effects that require none of that kind of thing. To me, that shows a real bias. It's interesting that most of the talk seems to center on the big illusion at the end of each show and the Close-up effects that hopefully will be marketed and sold and that many of us will perform, like "sinful" from last season get little attention initially. I would imagine that if the torn and restored bill he performed were available right now... many of those who have been critical would buy and perform it and give little credit in this thread to Criss for doing it on his show.
He is bringing Magic into homes in massive numbers. Just go look at Banacheks earlier post. Those are amazing numbers folks! I believe we should be very excited about the fact that so many people are being exposed to new thinking and seeing a weekly show featuring some amazing Magic. Many here seem to ignore the fact that most all of us use gimmicks to accomplish what looks like the impossible to the audience. Thumb tips, gaffed coins, gaffed cards, IT and ITR's, gaffed electronics, etc.,etc. The show appears to be a hit with the folks that matter most, the audience! We should be happy about that. Best to all, Bobby |

There are 99,000,000 households with tv's in the usa - 2 million is not a lot. syndication shows even carry a 5 or more. |

To those boasting of Mindfreaks ratings. Ratings don't mean quality...just current popularity. I bet Monica Lewinski's television appearances got even higher ratings...and she sucked...whats that say for the Mindfreak show?

For A&E it was a major hit, and I think Angel did the job they ask from him. Regardless for what I (or anyone) might think of him, he's getting the job done and that's what's most important.
