Misdirection is indispensable for close-up magic, but does it get less effective as the size of the trick increases?

Had you ever seen Blackstone vanish the ducks, or produce the elephant?
Rudy Coby's "puppet man" routine has a brilliant moment of very strong (and bold) misdirection. There are many different types of misdirection, and not all are applicable to every scenario or performing environment or venue. But stage misdirection is quite real, and very powerful as a tool.

Another powerful misdirection for stage magic is Casting Misdirection. There was this incredible Chinese magician who did a beautiful parasol act. She was perhaps 14 years old. She would produce, toss reproduce....she was just casting her misdirection here and there using parasols, and elegant streamers while retrieving and producing things without us knowing it. IMO misdirection applies to anything that is not self working!

In another thread I wrote about the time that I threw a faulty prop stage right as my leggy assistant entered stage left. The audience thought I made the thing disappear.

I used to work a dove act. As I was center stage under a tight spot, my assistant would enter stage right. I would light a piece of flash paper from a candle and toss it in her direction. At precisly the same instant, she would pitch a dove toward me from her upstage side. They would meet in the middle, the dove slightly behind the fire (upstage).
Because the dove was pitched tail first it immediately flew back to her creating the illusion of a straight line, one direction transformation. I tossed fire toward her, it turned into a dove, and continued to fly to her, as the spotlight widened. The illusion was extremely good.

The topic of this thread is a joke right?
misdirection is even MORE essential if anything with bigger illusions. when it is ignored you get a bunch of guys who use camera cuts, stooges and lighting for misdirection........oh wait that is the future of magic I am describing I guess. my bad

TRUE Jonathan.
How about "directing attention"? I think that clarifies it more. Misdirection is a term everyone understands, but dosn't make it make sense now does it?

If you want to nit pick the word MORE should not have been used. ESSENTIAL itself can't really be quantified in that manner. It is like being KIND OF PREGNANT.
Do we want to debate semantics, or make a point? You get the point. It HAS TO BE THERE. Either way. Can we move on?

No let's pick a little more. I think it's essential in large illusions, but more essential in close-up and twice as essential in mentalism. And a tubal pregnancy could be considered as kind of pregnant. Am I driving you into hysterics Danny? Just kidding. I accept your apology.

Sure. Let's avoid nit-picking. I prefer the term "splitting hairs", like was assumed to be ok when regarding the word "misdirection" (another speed bump on an otherwise smooth path).

Why does everyone want to simply argue? Michael if the misdirection thing bothered you sorry but it wasn't me now was it?
It almost seems like we feel superior when we can nit pick things. Or split hairs as you say Michael. It is almost always at this point in every thread that it deteriroates into personal attacks and nit picking and hair splitting and any real chance of learning anything from anyone goes right out the window. Can we avoid this happening? Although it is a rhetorical question, I doubt it.

Dannydoyle,
Once again we are on the same side. I am aware that it wasn't you. So as not to further hijack this thread, I offer only an apology for any misunderstanding. ~michael

I think nit picking and splitting hairs are two different things. Nit picking involves finding small insignificant flaws. Where splitting hairs involves dissecting the insignificant details.
This thread is a prime example of misdirection, it's not going where anyone wants it to. Actually my original objection was to Danny saying "misdirection is even MORE essential if anything with bigger illusions." . It was a bold statement that I disagreed with. It was not semantics or nit picking. Every thing after that (including paragraph 1 above) was me just goofing around. Oh and I don't feel superior, I'm used to it now.

No I am from Australia so there are few opportunity to see Illusionists of that Caliber here, or at least to my knowledge. I saw it on his "Coolest Magician in The World" TV show when they used to show that here. I haven't seen it since I was about 10 when I saw it but my oath did it fool me! It was a good enough effect for me to be 21 now and still remember its name and how it went have not seen it for 11 years.
