Getting an Inviso-torch or Phoenix from MagicSmith. Is there a certain brand of Butane Fuel that is better than the others and any other helpful handling tips?

The instructions that come with it are reasonable. And I have used Name brand, and Brand X butane, and it all burns fine. So I tend to buy the lowest price I can find, and get pretty big containers, 8 inches high and 1 1/2 or more in diameter at around $1.99

First tip; (I don't know if anybody else has ever done this, and I am showing my ignorance, but here goes...) When you first get it, make sure you attach the unit as instructed. Don't just hold the Reservoir in one hand and move the other to performing range, light it and release it. It will go out as it is supposed to, but the end will retract and will hit the hand holding Reservoir and give you a nasty blood blister that will last weeks! And it Hurts!!!

I had just gotten my first one, and was showing my 30 year old son my new toy, and wham! He is still laughing at me for yelling and jumping up and down. The little ingrate! But I guess it looked funny. However, it surely didn't feel that way though. So be careful.

Also be very careful where you perform./practice with it. Go to Home Depot, or somewhere like that get a Fire extinguisher to keep handy. I have never needed mine yet. But I HAVE it, just in case.

Be safe and make good magic!

I just got my pair today from Jim, and having fiddled with them, they look very well built, and definitely inspire confidence in their use.

I'm based in Canada, got a can of Ronson Multi-Fill butane fuel from Safeway (a pretty big can at about 8 inches as described by BroDavid) and it works fine. Cost me 4 Canadian pesos.

Still trying to figure out where to attach the Phonenix's tank for better results. Had it behind my back which resulted in the unit giving my abs a hit. Not that I mind the slight bump (my abs need the workout for sure), but the noise is pretty audible. When I have it up on the front at about collarbone level, tube doesn't seem to pull well to fill with gas. Any suggestions?

I am flicking the igniting wheel with my first finger, but the wheel sometimes catches and doesn't turn. Any tips on that?
Really liking the Phonenix, credit goes to Jim for coming up with such a nifty product. And thanks to BroDavid for the tip, most probably saved myself from a couple of blood blisters.
thanks y'all

I've also just got an Invisio-torch. However, it gets very hot. Is there a way to conceal it and not burn yourself?

I would like to use it to light a spectators cigarette. Any hints would be appreciated.

You could turn it down, but the effect wouldn't be as good in general.

But the only way mine gets hot, is if you try to hold the flame for too long. And it isn't designed for continuous flame. The whole idea is "flash" and then be clean.

However the idea of using it in close proximity to anyone's face, even if turned down, is probably not a good idea.

I've tried it both turned way up so that the flame stays away from the tip and also the size you'd get from a normal lighter. Either way I can only hold it for about 3 seconds.... So I guess as you say, just a flash.

Well I guess I just have to play with it for a while to really get the feel for what it really can do.

Thanx for your reply.

Hey flyboy, I just got an inviso-torch as well. I haven't had any problems with it getting hot. I can leave mine on as long as I have butane. As far as the wheel stopping from turning, I always turn it a little just before using it. This solves the problem for me most of the time but when practicing, it can be annoying.

I've been playing around with having the tube run down my sleeve. This way the angles are much better. Unfortunately the flint wheel tends to scratch up my forearm but hey, anything for the art!

Jonathan

P.S. Do you attach the tank to your shirt or to your coat?

If you can take the hose off, cut the bad end, and reattach, you could get by without totally replacing the tubing.

I don't have mine in front of me, but from memory about how it is attached, I don't think it would be too hard to do that.

If it was mine, and I didn't know what else to do, I would contact Jim Pace and ask for his suggestion. Nobody knows the Inviso-Torch better than the guy who created it.
