I recently bought a cigarette thru coin trick and I have had problems with the cigarette not being big enough. I have tried a couple of brands of cigarette. I am not a smoker so I don't know if there are any differences when it comes to size of cigarettes. Is there anything else that you have used to put through a coin? Any help would be great. Thanks.

i have that trick and it may be the coin because mine fits snugly.. the only thing i can recommend is either go back to where you bought it and exchange it or try camel wides. there is also a cig. called jumbo that may work for you

Have you tried any pens?

...or a rolled up bill? The bill would expand to fill the hole pretty much no matter what the size of the hole is.

My preference is a mechanical pencil as it is the perfect size and as an avid anti-smoker, I prefer it for that too.

I think that Doug Henning once used a feather to perform this effect. Copperfield used a 'chopstick'. I looked for a screw that would fit the hole, but could not find one that was a good match. I think that pens and dollars are your best bet.

I like the dollar bill idea the best, but you can also create your own fake cigarettes very easily....cut a strip of paper about 6" long by the length of a cigarette. Color about 2" (the width) of the filter a nice filter color. I roll mine around a round pencil, then stuff them with Kleenex pieces, while adding a bit of Elmers glue to hold it all in. The last bit, can be colored to look like tobacco, or made to look very real. I have a great method for that too, if you are interested. I have made cigarettes on pulls, and also shims with the above method.

Hey Seth,
You'll have to ask Richard Kaufman. I gave him the routine this summer, but I have no idea when he'll decide to use it! Hopefully soon (and it will be in my new lecture notes as well. PM me if you're interested - Michael Rubinstein)

Jim Krenz was selling a dollar bill through coin routine that used a coin with a simple hole through it. No trapdoor, just a hole. The routine provides a clever switch for the borrowed coin and leaves the coin loaner believing that he removed the coin from the bill at the end. I saw him do this at a lecture in Chicago a few years ago. Last I heard he was living in LA.

Sid Mayer,

Michael Ammar has some great tips for handling (and even a bit of self promotion when you perform this trick) for what he called the Tradeshow Pencil Through Quarter. It's on his "Michael Ammar LIVE!" video (his 1990 lecture taped live at the Magic Castle). It's quite good (and the rest of the tape ain't bad 'neither!). |
