It is generally conceded that when Dai Vernon moved west to the Magic Castle in the early 60's, the center of close-up magic moved with him. Thus the center of close-up magic moved from New York City to Los Angeles.
Where is the center of close-up magic today? New York City? Los Angeles? Las Vegas? Or where? Dai Bato |

The "center" of closeup magic is more likely a few places, as some people have kept things going for over fifty years now.

In this era of web fueled street magic kids paying a hundred bucks for a pack of Jerry's Nuggets, Magic Castle full of screaming girls who don't like magic but have a pass that their uncle gave them, I'd prefer that it STILL was Chicago, and still in a "gotta be over 21" restaraunt or bar!
Jack Pyle stopping in the middle of his routine to say to the spec "hand me my scotch 'n soda" kinda Chicago magic scene. Eat some ribs or a big steak, drink some booze, magicians performing for true fans or other magicians kinda Chicago scene! If given the choice between THAT Chicago scene or the current Internet-Street-TV-crack head-edit for months after the shoot kind of magic, I'll take Chicago baby!! |
