They pick a card, I guess it... mental magic, right? how would it be mentalism? if maybe they "thought" of a card and I guessed it? I like to do the whole "i have a 50/50 shot bit" red or black... diamond or heart... number or suit... odd or even.. BAM! anyone do it like this? it seemed like the best way to do it for my friends who knew 2 months ago that I couldn't read minds...

Not sure exactly what your question is. Mental magic is a pretty broad field which includes things like sending and receiving thoughts and impossible predictions (sometimes other things like spirit messages or moving objects with your mind, etc)
There are a number of ways to take telling a spectator what their card is and turn it into mental magic. You could predict in advance what their card would be, you could pick pieces of information (black, spade, even, etc) out of their brain. You can simply say "take a card, don't let me see it and whatever you do, don't say out loud that it's the three of hearts" (you can get women to scream with that one on a good night). Most important is that the the presentation is interesting/fascinating/entertaining. You don't want it to look like you're playing 20 questions with them. Hope this helps. James |

Nairbles , try to get some more insight first on the topic you want to talk/ask about. as Jameson mentioned , mentalism is a vast field. if you want to become a good mentalist you need to work like crazy on your presentation.
the effect you mentioned is an easy yet hard hitting effect. I used to perform that from time to time a very long time ago if you are interested in mentalism , I suggest you get Corinda's book and start from there. good luck and best to ya -Matt

"They pick a card, I guess it..." is a stunt. They might not know what the trickery was, but they know it's trickery.
If you do a mentalism effect in the middle of a magic performance - you cut to the aces, you do an ambitious card, then you have them pick a card and you read their minds - that's mental magic. You've established in their minds that you're a skilled manipulator. You can be blowing them away, entertaining the socks off them, but there isn't a tiny belief deep down that you may have really changed the red backed card into a blue backed card. But if you start out by talking about the innate and untapped potential of the mind, or acute psychological observation, or whatever it is that allows you to read minds, and then demonstrate that power - and do nothing else that might suggest you have any skills at sleight of hand or any other kind of manipulation - you will leave a tiny seed of a thought in your audience. Maybe, just maybe, you can communicate without words, you can read psychological clues, you can read minds. It had to be a trick - but it couldn't have been... And that takes presentation. As Matt Malinas suggested, you should get Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism. Not only will you learn what kinds of effects make up mentalism, you'll learn how to present them as mentalism. |
