Well at this point, the only ones that feel cheated are Magic Critics. (and may be the only ones who will ever feel cheated) Which, shouldn't be that important to someone whos target audience is real people.

Ok...now that sounds like when old people critisize the new generation on their taste. "What is this world coming to"...

While our quality of lifestyle has improved considerably over the past 200 years, the quality of interaction with each other has declined. When I was young, you simply did not drive around with your radio playing loud enough for it to be heard inside a dweling. Now that is the expected norm. |

Are you really suggesting that the average person in his/her car is driving around with their radio blaring loud enough to be heard inside a dwelling? Maybe if the average person is driving in a tin can and the average dwelling is a cardboard box . . .
Every generation looks at the next and thinks that they've somehow lost something that their generation had, yet somehow, the world marches on. I just can't wait to find out how my children's generation are going to mess the place up.

I'm suggesting that enough of them are doing it that I get to hear at least 5 different songs a night. I'm suggesting this didn't happen, with any regularity untill after 90'.
Are you suggesting that the overall attitude of society isn't getting less and less considerate of those around them? |

Yes.

Then how do you explain the recordable differences in the general actions of complete strangers towards the effect they have on my portion of the world and my rights within it, from the 70s' to today? How is it, that in the exact same house 20 years ago I could go a whole month without hearing loud music while today I can't go 3 hours?
Explain why Copperfield wore eveningwear or costumes and Blaine wears T-shirts. |

I'm sorry, but exactly when did this become eveningwear? Click here to view attached image.

Degradation od sociatal standards, particularly as portrayed in magic.
Your link. A. That isn't just a T-shirt. It's a T-shirt and jacket. A bright red jacket. B. Would you not consider that to be a costume, ment to be representitive of the motercycle depicted just behind him? Did he perform an entire show in that outfit? |

I just don't get how this discussion degraded into such subjective issues. I do agree that the reliance on tv editing and stooges is not a good thing for magic, but all the other criticisms is sounding like the old man in the barbershop stereotype.
Young people always annoy the older generation. I did it, you did it. It's just that the older we get, the more we forget and the more sensitive we get to it. Worrying about what the future will look like with the younger generation running things is a cliche that likely dates back to the beginning of our species. Rules, what rules? Like the pirate code, they're more like guidelines and most of the greatest magicians of old were great because they would break the old rules and create new paradigms. Criticising the performance styles of Blaine or Angel is like shouting at the rain. If you want to provide constructive advice to the next generation of magicians, stick to things that are not grounded in such subjective personal preferences and encourage them to find their own style and not simply mimic others.

I think some of his tricks are clever and different even though some are just rehashing of classics...The torn apart girl was different but fun..

Nobody seems to have gotten the point of what I wrote awhile back on this thread about Chris Angel not bringing his vanished audience members back. And Jack Scratch responded: Quote:
It's the Goth thing. They seem to think dark/evil/gothic/black etc is cool. Misses the whole point if you ask me, but then I think he misses the whole point as well, so it is hardly a surprise. I think Jack hit the nail on the head with his comment. The whole Dark Mystery thing is all the rage. But it's hardly new and less effective than other performers in the past... Quote:
In the late '70s, a magician named Richiardi closed his show with an absolutely stunning illusion. He took his young assistant and cut her in half. That's it. There was no resolution beyond it. He would invite the audience to walk up and examine the corpse, entrails and all. For Teller, the smaller and quieter half of Penn & Teller, the brilliance was in leaving the audience with a feeling of intellect and not of horror, despite the viscera dripping across the stage. |
