How do you guys move your show around?
I've got a Jeep Cherokee and am looking to get an even bigger vehicle but I'm wondering what the rest of you folks use? |

I own a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee as well as a 97 Jeep Wrangler....
I sometimes hook up a trailer to either of them. I used to use this trailer for my quads. I now haul one version of my show around to the various venues in it. Since it was not covered I went to a weld shop and had a cage built around it. I then had the floor sprayed with rubber to protect the edges of my pieces of equipment. I have a friend who went to a bakery and purchased one of their used bread delivery trucks and picked it up for $4,500 U.S. which he had painted with his logo and contact information. He had to do some maintenance on it but, it now looks very proffesional. My dream is to have one like Dean Hankey’s, which has the stage contained in it. When you drop one of the walls it unfolds into the working stage platform. Take care and break a leg! |

We own a Freightliner FL70. It has a condo sleeper and can sleep three people. It has a 24 ft. box with a 5,000 lb. lift gate. It will be for sale in February. That is when our dream rig will be finished being built.
It is a FL112 with a full Toterhome conversion. It sleeps 5, including a queen bed, sofa, dinette, a full kitchen and a full bath. It has a slide out for when we are parked. We will be pulling a 40ft 3-car stacker trailer. 40 foot of interior space and just over 10 ft of interior height. Contact me at kevin@livingillusions.com if you are interested in the FL70. We have 2 parties interested, but you never what will happen. Kevin http://www.livingillusions.com/

Check out pull trailers. You have the vehicle, so get a long one. I made the mistake of a short one (16 feet) and it is full and I have no more room, so I switch illusions from my shed to the trailer when necessary.
Plan for a theatrical light bar, possible portable stage, Backdrops, and other things including packing boxes for your illusions. You don't want them to bounce around.

I drive a full-size cargo van. On occasion, I have rented a U-Haul trailer, but that is very rare. I've become very adept at fitting everything in.
I do keep my cargo space in mind when considering illusion purchases. Since most of my shows take place in banquet halls and meeting rooms, I mostly perform on portable stages. I don't have the room for really large illusions. |

We usually move the show in a 22ft box truck, unless of course Kevin sends me photos and I get his truck!

I use a 24-foot box truck. I painted it and put my logo on it. It has a gate lift, which is very nice. I one thing I would say is important is to make sure that the sides and top are strong enough to hang things. You should be able use every square inch of space. I have found hanging props to be great because I can get smaller props and boxes underneath them.

I use a 20 ft. box truck with a lift on it. I used to travel with a full sized custom van and a matching 14ft trailer. The big truck is some getting use to and to be honest is kind of hard to maneuver around at smaller venues with small parking lots and lot's of cars.

We rent trucks because we use a 16 footer to a 26 footer depending on the booking.
We did tour/travel in a 3/4-ton van with a 4-illusion show in 1989-1996 and hotel-ed it. We used a trailer for a short time, and outgrew it.

In 1959 my dad bought an Int'l Step-In Van,
Aluminum-Steel body, Full height, Straight-six engine. Room for all our illusions, plus out chickens, and 3 people. Plus a couch that turns into a bed if you need a name or an overnight stay. He has put 2 engines in and has driven over 500,000 miles with it. Think UPS truck like.

The equipment is transported in two 30' dock-height diesel trucks, while the crew travels in a conversion van. At the moment, it works well for our show.

If you’re looking at vans go with a Chevy. I had my old one for 20 years...no joke. It was a 1982 and it’s still going. We now travel with a Chevy 3500 extended van and we pack it all in. We recently acquired the Windshear Illusion, and we even got that in, really. I've always had good experience with my old van so when it was time to get the new one there was no question what to get.

I rent the transportation, a 5-ton lorry. Put the cost into the show's fees.
Works well so far.

Okay, so that chrysler isn't quite big enough. What I really do is, close my eyes, and imagine my equipment in its perfect place....

When I trouped my illusion show, I managed to squeeze all of it into a Chevy 3500 van. I loved that truck, except for parking it!
If you are going to be changing venues often, you need to choose a vehicle that will allow you to roll the illusions on and off without having to collapse them. Many illusions, although they are built so you can take them apart for packing, do not really fare well if you are constantly assembling and disassembling them. It also cuts down on setup and takedown time when you don't have to "build" the show everytime you go to a new venue. I was lucky in that most of my shows were in the same place for several weeks.

Bill is correct about not breaking down illusions. Most all of our illusions are no longer in the cases that were made for them when they were built. We had custom cases made for them in their built position. For instance our Origami no longer is broken down, it is in a case fully built other than the foldng box. It then rests on top of another case that has caster dishes in it. We try to use as much vertical space as possible in the big rig. Just today we built basically rafters in the rig for 60ft of box truss. It is completely out of the way and all the illusions can roll in and out right under the flown truss. By not breaking down, yes it takes more room, but set up is far easier and there is less wear and tear on the props.
