Why? That's it I mean why is it done? This goes with all Center Tears. I mean I have recently gotten proficient with Richards PCT. I also really do plan on using it. I am just curious about the reason that some of you guys give for the whole process. I mean if they think you could really read there thought, why have them write it out. I am not trying to downsize the move, I find it to be great and will definitely use it. Just wondering what some of you guys are using as your explanation during the process of writing, folding, ripping and Well the secret move. Just wanted to know before I go out there performing it.
I hope what I am asking makes sense, if not then just ask and ill try to reiterate.

Please do a search on Richard Osterlind's many responses to this question. Also see his guide book: The Act.
When I perform a tear effect, I don't give an explation for the tear. I take the paper rip it and give it to the spectator to rip some more. I've never been asked why I ripped the paper. If I were then I might respond that it releases the information into the ethers. Michael |

If I tell my specator that "Dr X will do what the h*** you want, when the h*** you want" Wont MY SPECTATORS get really lost in the effect? THey would ask questions like.
"who is dr X"? "Why are you speaking in some kind of third person"? "Why is Dr X so D*** annoying"? |

In Stewart Cumberland's DVD he mentioned something (forgive me for not giving the exact quote) but basically the audience only makes a big deal when you make it a big deal. IF you act as if it is perfectly normal then they wont question it. So long story short make it look normal and the audience won't care.

I briefly mention that writing words, or whatever, down helps you, and thus me, visualise it.

Paisa your question is perfectly reasonable. I've come to two conclusions.
#1. Having the spec write down a question, then you getting it into your hands and tearing it up in order for you to read his mind doesn't make much sense. #2. Conclusion #1 doesn't matter at all. My first hint that No. 2 was true was the fact that mentalists have been going through this silly, unnecessary ritual for many decades and knocking audiences dead with it. Obviously a good mentalist just finesses the whole issue. To expand on what others have said here I'm thinking along these lines: 1. Don't draw undue attention to it. 2. Writing it down is justifiable to cause the mind to focus. ("I want you to focus on a single thought...) 3. Handling the paper can be justified in terms of psychometry. Just don't say so explicitly. If you're picking a vibe while the paper is in your hands, people will make the connection. Just my $.02.

I never have anyone comment about writing it down I can remember. I do sometimes hear them say I saw the writing (like tonight) and it bothers the heck out of me. Ive done the PCT hundreds of times and sometimes I don't know if I get careless or not performing it in the off beat or taking too long to get the info needed. I use the Center Read for stage and tonight I fumbled too much. Heard a comment from a man on that but perhaps it was well deserved. Oh well, wonder if everyone goes through nights like this or some have never had an unperfect show:(

Hey Candini don't sweat it my friend! These things happen,be honest with you I have done the tear hundreds of times on stage and I use a time delay from when its written to when the info is revealed.I heard magicians comment on the piece that the audience seem to forget that the spec wrote something down.I also used a peek that's very clean and impossible for anyone to notice or see through so maybe this helps also.I give two reasons for the tear...
1.Write something down because it helps you to concentrate on your thought and not saying that you would now but if you were to change your mind we would have proof.....but you know what(looks at audience and asks) can we trust her?...yea think we can so I'm just going to...(tear takes place) End of the day I think there really is no need to justify it..no need to draw attention to it and simply just do it.Use the reasons I describe above or maybe you need to get psychic impressions from the object just like they do on T.V.(Osterlind I'm sure menthioned this in a previous thread) Candini we have all been there and done that, its these shows that help us improve, maybe its a blessing that you heard that spec comment about your tear..such real critique from a real world spec is absolute gold, take it upon board and learn from it and maybe rethink your tear and the patter you use for it. All the best, P |

Here are a couple of possibilities.
1) "I can't just look into people's minds and see everything that goes on, but the act of writing something down imbues it with energy, gives it focus, and imprints it in your mind in a unique way. Okay, the energy's focused, we don't need this anymore" <rip, tear> 2) "When I discern thoughts, I specifically access the portion of the brain which processes images. Please write something down, look at it briefly, and then visualize those letters in your mind's eye... good. Now that you've reproduced it vividly in your head, we don't need this anymore..." <rip, tear> Also, along the lines of a Dunninger method, 3) "Go ahead and write something down, and then just by touching it, I may be able to discern... wait! For some reason this is already coming through really strongly -- I don't think we even NEED anything on paper!" <rip, tear> Or, with multiple spectators, 4) "Write it down, and now show it to two other people, who will simply read it silently to themselves. How about this man here, and now this lady. Good. Now," <rip, tear> "this word exists only in your three minds. I will stand in the center of you, and by simple contra-psychic triangulation, I will attempt to discern..." (etc.) Seth |

Just getting home from a booking. I just wanted to comment about the wonderful PCT. A few months ago, I switched to thicker card stock since I had read so much about see through this and that. I never had a spectator comment about seeing through any of the paper I used before. I use to just tear computer copy paper and go from there. When I went to the thicker card stock, I start fumbling more to get it open which invited unwanted attention.
Tonight I switched to 25 lb yellow paper from Walmart and did the PCT several times and not once did I experience any problems. I do want to go up to 65 lb after this is used up but it sure is good to have my PCT back under my pillow. I now different performers prefer thicker but I got use to thin and want to stay with it for me. Hats off to Richard Osterlind and all the help he has given to the mentalism community!

Candini, I think I am using 80lb card stock now but even when I was using cut down 3x5 card stock, I found that after I take the paper back and make my first fold, the fold is slightly droped a bit (1/8")when the edges come together. This makes it easy to tear as you when you 'start tearing' you are not tearing though the full thickness of all the folds untill the tear is under way. Maybe this slight down jog makes a difference as I never have had a problem getting the piece to open when it should.
