Ah, all those days of putting coins on the train tracks.
A delinquent before I even knew what I was doing.

Really, Pete? Was it for defacing money or for manufacturing explosives, or both?

My bank tells me you must have "more than one half" of the bill, and it must have at least one complete serial number. (So, giving them the middle 2/3 won't cut it, apparently!)
I prefer to pass my "scraps" at the drive-up window at Wendy's. You already have your food and they are not inclined to refuse your $20 even if it DOES have a corner missing... |

First of all, the key word here is, "intent" to stop the circulation of the currency. Like Astrid said above, you can take your cut bill and exchange it for a new one. If you have a dollar bill that's cut in half they'll give you .50cents for it. Or simply save the other half and when you're done with it tape it back together and exchange it for a new one.

You CANNOT get fifty cents for half a bill! They aren't like the old 'pieces of eight' where you could just cut it into how much you needed to hand over to pay your tab! Like it says up there, you need OVER 50% of the bill, including at least one complete serial number, and they'll exchange it for a complete new bill. Otherwise, what you have is scrap paper, not money.

Don't know. Maybe just the banks that I go to. They always give me .50cents for my half bills with no problem.

If they do, they are in violation of federal law. Follow the links above and read what the government says about it.
