Howdy, all!
I'm trying to find a clear, slightly-translucent plastic that can be molded into simple shapes (like cubes, and rods). [Recall the movie "Abyss", where sea water takes on its own identity.] Anyone have any sources/contacts? Thanks much!

To the best of my knowledge, there are no substances, plastic or otherwise, that are simultaneously clear and translucent.
We may be able to help you if you can better describe what you need and/or are trying to accomplish. We're all here to help each other ... but you have to help us to help. Okay? Sid

We buy all of our plexiglass for our illsuions such as Poltergeist and Devil's Reflection(-Acrylite, or Acrylite plus(AP is 30% stronger but double the money, but great if you are using rivits or drilling into it) from a warehouse in Toronto (WPS Plastics) and they deal wholesale and retail to all over North America. They have everything under the sun already moulded such as cubes, tubes and rods as well as different textures, sizes, thicknesses, and colors. And even water like texture that can be moulded for what you want.
Just to let you know Plexiglas is extremely expensive, infact in most cases it is far more expensive than glass itself. Several dollars a square foot just for the cheap stuff. Also you need special blades and so forth to machine it properly. A good blade will run you close to $100.00 alone, and I wouldn't recomend using a table saw less than 2 hp to make the inital cuts, And if you buy big lengths it will be cheaper but you will need a large fence for your saw and because it bends it may require 2-3 people to cut the sheet. As long as you know all of this going in. Although Im sure you already know all of this stuff. Also It is usually more money to buy Plexiglas from places like Home Depot, and it is usually of poorer quality. P.

Sid: By "clear", I intended to mean "uncolored", as opposed to "perfectly transparent". Thanks for pouncing on the *letter* of my question, as opposed to the *intent*.
Peter: Your tips are *exactly* what I was looking for - Many Thanks! I promise to send you a video of the finished product; I truly think I've come up with something special! RC

You could use glass and mineral oil. As long as the two objects have the same index of refraction the glass will be invisable under the oil.
http://www.exploratorium.edu/snacks/disa......ods.html The only material that I know of that has an index of refraction that matches water is Sodium Polyacrylamide crystals. (Available in large bags at garden centers as Soil Moist) Tim |

Build a vacuum forming table. You can cast about any shape with acrylic or plexiglass.

Jon...you beat me to it. I was going to suggest that as well. I have attended several model Railroad shows where this is showcased.
The stuff cocomax was referring to is also available under the name 'Water Gems' from various craft stores (Michaels, AC Moore, Joann Fabric...) in smaller quantities, like pint and quart jars. Look under the flower arranging supplies.

There are several online taxidermy supply companies that sell what you are looking for. It is used in making display mounts for fish.
Try Wasco and or VanDykes. |

One of the last living 10-in-one performers. I wanted to be in show business the worst way, and that was it.
