Hi guys! First time poster here...seems like a great forum. Total newbie, been playing around with some coin vanishes, sleights, etc.
I've seen several videos of people doing a classic false transfer, some better than others...and my question is specifically about the movement of the middle and ring fingers as they take the coin - obviously the goal is to keep movement to a minimum...any tips for doing this? It seems when I do it I fool people, but my goal is to make it look as natural as possible. As the middle and ring finger stretch forward to take the coin, it seems the index finger curls upwards a bit, then those 2 fingers move, then I move the index finger back down to compensate. You can see these fingers move even with the cover of the other hand. Done quickly it's too fast to notice everything, but something still looks fishy when I watch myself do it in the mirror. Tips? |

Spider, another really good dvd to help you along at this point is "Michael Ammar's Complete Introduction to Coin Magic." It's one of the very best beginner dvds out there that I've seen. He cover's false transfers extensively, a few of them, including the one you're speaking of here. He also covers a lot of other stuff on this dvd. One of the best out there for "newbies" like you. Hey, he also does a very nice "coin to key" Ammar is a wonderful teacher and teaches you an lot about all the in's and outs of coin magic and doing good effective magic.
Good luck again. -MB http://www.hobbytron.com/Micheal-Ammar-C......DVD.html

Personsally I didn't really like Ammar's DVD, very few of the tricks appealed to me, I didn't likethe layout of the DVD or Ammar's performance style.
I take it you have Bobo's already? I would recommend David Stones DVDs, and when you see his classic palm vanish, you might not want to do the vanish that starts at the fingertips. |

As a returnee to magic, I picked up Ammar's DVD recently--a also got a VHS of him teaching some rubber band effects. Those are my only two interactions with Ammar, but I can understand being a bit put off by his style, especially in the Introduction DVD.
The information is very basic--but good. His "style", approach and attempt at humor are a bit annoying. On the VHS, when he's a bit more straight forward, I like his style a lot better. The "tricks" on the Introductory coin DVD aren't so hot, but the foundational moves are actually very good. I agree that an aspiring coin man will want to move on from Ammar, but I think it's a decent introductory product to get you started. It may not take you where you want to ultimately be, but it will get you going. BooRadley |

Whilst I agree that the foundation moves are good, they are also on Stone's DVDs and taught just as well, if nto mroe so. More advanced moves are tought, a few backclips , torres moves, tea for two clip. For only a little bit more money you are getting much more moves and much, much better tricks. The only thing I would say is the voice over, whilst not detracting from the descriptions or anything, makes David Stone's patter sound appaling. On the dvd I think you can turn off the voice over, which I would recomend doing whilst watching the performance of the tricks.
You can probably pick these up on eBay dirt cheap, which is what I did. Anyone in the UK I saw Rindfleish's Extreme Coin Magic on 'Buy Now!' for £8. I was so annoyed I couldn't get it... |

With regard to the Rindfleish DVD; did you notice this bit of the description:
This DVD doesn't come in original case as illustrated, but in a plastic wallet. It is in DVD-R format. Please make sure your DVD player or PC reads this (almost all newer ones do) If that doesn't scream PIRATE! I'm not sure what will. Especially since he's got two left... Take care, Ian |

Hey spider, glad to see that you took my initial advice, and indeed already have Ammar's Complete Intro to Coin Magic. As I said, it's exactly what it says it is and it's good at what it does. Don't get wrapped up into all the other stuff here. Many people don't like Sankey's style, don't like Sylvester's style, etc...But I'll tellya, their dvd's are good, sold tremendously, and presented some great magic...Don't get so wrapped up in whether or not you like the professor teaching your class, just try to get the information he's trying to impart, that's what's most important. And for the record, as I said, I thought the Ammar dvd was most effective in giving and demonstrating introductory/effective technique, in teaching situatioins and in real-life scenarios. To each his own, but I'm glad you got the dvd...It's a great way to start...Where you go from there is up to you, as it should be. -MB

Hi Spider,
You are making the assumption that a false transfer requires movement of the middle or ring fingers. That is not always the case. Larry Barnowsky's URV does not use those fingers to steal or clip the coin and because of that those fingers are not seen moving. In fact other than a slight motion of the index finger you don't see any finger motion. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/?v=rFD4kuGv-vs URV or http://www.geocities.com/larrybarnowsky/movieclips.html BJ |

You should maybe get a copy of Mike Rubensteins Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights DVD set.
He explains everything very clearly and you also get some classy clasical music in the background. Rock on! Seriously, get these DVDs, you will not regret it. |

There's a trailer for Basic Coin Magic that has a false transfer at http://www.virtualmagicshow.com/bcm
Take care, Ian |

Mb, thanks for the advice. Boxjumper - that's exactly what I was looking for - Larry's URV looked very natural. Where can I learn that method?

Spider,
The URV is taught only in the book 21st Century Coin Mechanics. You can info about it and how to order at: http://www.geocities.com/larrybarnowsky BJ |
