I attended a Joshua Jay lecture not too long ago and I must say I was very impressed. He fooled me badly with his version of any card at any number (incredibly ingenious) and the effect where he predicts a spectators height (where does he come up with this stuff? Amazing!) I was surprised though when he did a 3 coin vanish sequence. At the end, when he vanishes the third coin, he takes credit for the "move" which I've been doing for years. It is straight out of Bobo's coin magic. The one Joshua does (and the one I and many others have done) uses a minor extra thing, although even this thing is used in the original in almost the same way, and the coin goes to the same place and the move is identical. I'm not trying to criticize, but I just don't understand why so many people seem to miss this incredible vanish in MCM and why so many have credited this to Joshua Jay. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Ya know, that suggests a bit of good magic for magicians.
After secretly loading a coin under a volunteer's watch, you do apparently do the thing from MCM badly, then cuff the coin when showing that hand empty. Then you show your other hand empty. Then you say "watch" again, and take off your watch. They you say, "not my watch... yours" Sorry, perhaps too much Ramsay on the brain here.

I don't have the book right in front of me, but I believe it is called "New Era Coin vanish" or "New Era coin go" or something to that effect. I think this is the one I'm thinking of. I will find my book if that is not correct.

New Era Coin Go p34?
Could be a nice stage vanish, would be harder for close-up. I would imagine you don't need the watch aslong as your sleeves are rolled up and you can roll it. To retrieve you could either srop the arms to your sidwes or do the whole arms crossed thing. Is it kind of the opposite of the Smart Trick/Messiah Vanish you're thinking of? |

I was under the impression folks were seeking an item by Royal H. Brin, Jr. and I suggested going for the Milt Kort item a few pages further in. Never mind that pulse trick which follows the Brin bit, nothing to see there.

Could be that one as well, I wondered when you mentioned the 'sucker' aspect of it. Which one is it then Stanmaple, reverse Messiah type vanish or a steal and dump whilst grasping the watch.
Pulse trick looked good, I think I skimmed over it seeing that Bobo says "Here is one of the best reasons I know of for masterign the backpalm", but don't worry any other back clip will work in place, though obviously with different angles! |

I guess that is why the book is a classic of magic. I wonder how many people have purchased modern stuff like revolution vanish dvd for $20 and had it right under there noses all the time. I'm guessing the same guys that are about to pre order the black widow for $299. end of rant sorry

You are almost right, it's almost the same move, not quite. Paul, I didn't pay $20 for Mr. Jay's lecture but would have done so anyway. In fact, I would have even if I hadn't learned anything. I would have done it just for the priviledge of watching him perform.
As for Black Widow, it does have my curiousity up, but I wouldn't buy it before reading some real reviews. |

Rikbrooks, sorry I didn't mean that as swipe at anyone I just think sometimes as a collective we want the newest things out and forget where they derived from. I consider myself a professional but still refer back to most of my old classics in my library. only as a last resort do I put my hand in my pocket.....incidently I'm intrigues by the black widow.

I had a problem with his 3 coin vanish, sure the vanishes where awsome but It was kind of unatural to come out with "3 coins" in that fan (it just didn't look right, kind of like they were gimmicked...which they were). I would of perfered it if he produced the coins firtst, but other than that I love the routine and have applied his moves to my own routine.

When Joshua Jay taught this at the lecture I attended months ago, he did not take credit for that move. He even mentioned it was an old idea. (I think he mentioned it was in MCM too, but I'm not sure about that).
I also liked it a lot.
Humans make life so interesting. Do you know that in a universe so full of wonders, they have managed to create boredom. Quite astonishing.

Hello Gang,
I caught Josh at his Lecture that he did for the South Carolina Association of Magicians Convention (AKA SCAM). Josh published his sequence for the "Three Coin Vanish" in his Lecture notes entitled "Sleight of Hand and a Twist of Fate". Josh Credits both Bobo's modern coin magic (1952) and also References a move by Ivan Lowig called the "Pentium Vanish" (1997). Josh also states very clearly in the notes that it is not the moves for which he is taking credit, rather the very clean and uncluttered sequence. There are no hand to hand transfers, hand washing or awkward palms, and the coins are not continuously reproduced through-out the routine. Three coins are there and then they are not. Simple, Quick, and (IMHO) Breathtaking. Just my $1.50 worth, Robert Moreland |

When I first saw this vanish, I thought is was Joshuas vanish, but found it that Mark Leveridge had used this somewhere almost before or just after Josh was born, so I now call it Marks vanish before I call it Joshs

The watch has been used alot. The Nu-Greenburg Holdout as it was published in Magic Magazine a few years back. Stand Up Coin Power by Eivind Løwig has several routines that use the watch. These are just modern day references not including BOBO.
I'm sure Josh would be the first to tell you he didn't come up with the idea of using the watch. Josh does have a very good application and handling that are unique to him. This is important. The day peaople started wearing watches magicians started hiding coins there. Wouldn't you? : ) All the best, Kranzo
