I am in the market for a new set of cups...
The Sisti's and the JES's are about the same price... And I like the look of both of them... What set of cups would you recommed and why? I am looking for the most well made and the most durable. Thank you. Shawn.

Shawn,
Both are excellent choices. It all depends if you want the double or single beaded design. I happen to prefer the double beaded look (and I'm slightly biased of course). But you won't go wrong either way. The Squatty cups are slightly shorter and narrower, but they still hold a fairly large final load. I know RNT2 has done a tremendous job producing both lines of cups... both are simply works of art. You'll be proud to own either set. Regards, Jonathan Schweid, M.D. President, JESmagic |

It's not an easy choice. Think about this. You have two sets of cups made by the same people from the same basic material. The shape is similar. So the cups will very likely have the same or similar durability. The craftsmanship will also be the same or similar.
This is one of those cases where you have to decide for yourself. The chief distinction here would be the load capacity and the shoulder beads. If you want to be able to use a load that is a smidge larger, go for the Sisti cups. If you want a double bead cup, go for the JES Magic Squatty cups. I know it can be a difficult decision. I couldn't make up my mind on a lot of different cups. Look what happened to me!

You could also consider the Sherwood cups in copper or brass. I like both the Sisti and JES cups, but those Sherwood cups are lovely.
(...throws spanner in works and runs away) The choice is difficult - but it's wonderful to be spoiled for choice right now!
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

Yep Tough decision.
Also remember the Sherwoods take a Tennis Ball Sized Load and the other two take a Lacross ball. You will have to choose the look that is right for you...very tough choice and like Bill Says they are all well made. Mobius |

I got a set of Sisti's cups when he was having them made by Kevin Care (if I recall right)-- anyway, I think they were the first version Jim made, and since then, I've acquired a few other sets (much to my wife's dismay). Now that I've tried others, I would just mention that the Sisti cups I have can't take as big a final load as my Sherwoods. It was a real bummer for me, since I found some wonderful fake lemons that I wanted to use, but they just didn't fit. Construction of the Sisti cups may have changed since his first run, though. BTW, I've also got a set from RNT II (PF style) and can definitely recommend the company for their craftmanship; the cups are superb.

Frank,
thanks for your kind words. the only real change in the latest carnation of the Sisti cups was that the saddle was stretched just a weeeee bit to accomodate 3 nested 1" balls, some of the older sets could do this but varied from set to set. Also, the cups are now spun from 050 guage instead of 040 gauge metals, this increased the cup weight by 1-1.5 oz each cup. Also, the Nickel cups are triple plated, meaning they are nickel plated, buffed, plated again, buffed and then chromed to protect the finish, this process gives the Nickel sets a look of depth. We use this process on all our Nickel/Chrome pieces, so all in all only some minor changes were made in the Sisti runs that we produced. Jake

However, if you live near a Wal-Mart store, go over there and get a box of the "Fun Balls" they have in the sporting goods department. There are 15 balls for less than $5.00. They are of varying quality, but they work very nicely for load balls.

Is there much difference between these and the Riser Jumbo cups, in terms of weight, size, etc?

Yes big difference in size.
The Riser Jumbo's take a baseball. I am enjoying performing with my Roiser cups very much since getting them earlier this year. No comparison between the Riser's and the other cups mentioned...they are a different cup in feel and performability due to their size. They take some getting used to at first if you are used to smaller cups. Took about a week for me. Then you have the management problem of where to put the baseballs for the final loads...pockets on my performance attire were too small so a change had to be made. Well worth the change as I can now give away me baseball final loads if I so choose. The best advise on choosing these cups are to listen to what Bill, jake and others have posted to help weigh the decision. Then if you know someone that has a set of any of them such as a magic shop locally or another magician feel the cups in your own hand...that is part of the reson it becomes addictive I think. Every cup is different in it's own way. The Riser jumbos are about the smallest jumbos on the market. My personal dividing line between regular and jumbo cups is the ability to take a baseball.
The Cellini's are also capable of this sometimes. It depends on the baseball.

I took my Cellini cups to the sporting goods store and tried baseballs until I got 4 that fit just right. The cellini cups (to me) are easier to grasp for a cup that will take a baseball due to it's tapered shape. They also tip back very easily using the wand. Better than any other cup that I've ever tried.

Frank sells them. Otherwise you have to get them from Europe.

So another quick question.
I just got my Sistis from Jake... (Thanks Jake!!!) Anyway, I have been playing around with a 6 ball final load sequence useing strictly lacrosse balls, well the lacrosse balls are white and yellow.. The thing is the cups are dyeing the balls a some what spotty copperish tone, is this common??? Or is this just due to some residual polish or something.. Thanks. Shawn.

Shawn;
Wax ine insides of your cups. You are getting a reaction between the copper and "rubber". Jim |

Try washing the balls. See if the color comes off. I haven't had that problem with any cups before. The cups might need washing.

I tried washing them, it just made them worse...
I will have to get new balls later... I don't really want to clean the outside of the cups they are allready getting a nice even patina. Is it at all possible to just wash the inside an make it effective? Does waxing really work? Is it recomended? Any suggestions? Shawn.

Actually, you need to check with Jake on this. Sometimes, they paint the insides of the cups. If this is the case, you may need to remove the paint from the cups. Ask Jake before you go any further, but post us here, as well.
Waxing does help once you reach the desired appearance.
