Hi folks,
I'm looking for a citation to a billiards move. It's the one where you produce a second ball from the first using a shell, THEN you introduce a solid second ball by loading it into the shell under cover of bringing over your other hand to take and display the newly appeared ball. Could you post the origins of this strategy and sleight? Thanks in advance, Jonathan

Not sure, but I would venture to guess that DeKolta maybe was the culprit. Did he not do the FIRST multiplying? And if he used a shell, it would be a natural move to load like you describe.
My dad must have worked with him, as he described working with a magician that did billiard balls and had a mechanical device (I saw this years ago in England) made by Jon Martin, that delivered balls from a spring loaded device under the jacket and also up and out from an outer jacket handkerchief pocket.

That makes sense thought still leaves me puzzled.
I don't recall seeing this strategy in Greater Magic or in the Downs book The Art of Magic which came after DeKolta's invention was made popular by Hoffmann. So far I looked in the first few Hoffmann books and did not see it. Perhaps I missed it. Any clues? Makes me wish I had thought to ask back in 1974 when I saw this done in Tannen's all the time. Ah well, this is how we learn sometims. ![]()

They seem to be doing okay.
I trust both of them to keep the horseplay within bounds. They both have lives etc
