Hey guys... some of you may know me, most of you probably don't. But I've written a handful of essays on magic theory that I composed into a sort of book called "Magic by Theory." I'm not posting this as an advertisement, but rather an alternative to posting all the essays in individual topics on this board. I just wanted to let all those interested in theory that it's available.
I don't make any outlandish claims about this book, but I feel I have something to offer by way of magic philosophy and I hope you find some of the ideas useful. Thanks to everyone that posts essays on the board, they're all helpful and some are very inspiring. You can be the judge of my own essays, but I hope it offers even a little return for all I've learned on these boards. Have a good day! |

I hate your website. I hate the fact that you think magic should have a money back guarantee. Of course I also hate the fact that you actually charge for the stuff you sell (patter for the brainwave deck?!). I hate the fact that I don't think you know much about magic and you're trying to make money from it. I hate how you advertise magic, I hate the fact that you treat magic as a joke.
Magic should be performed not sold. Your website looks like a brainstorming dumpster. I have been performing magic longer than you have been learning it, I've had tons of ideas too, but that doesn't mean I should try to sell them right away. I only have a single product on the market, and I was asked to release it. Please invest your time in trying to make yourself a good magician (knowing a bunch of tricks does not make you a good magician), instead of creating bad ones (who buy and do your stuff). If you have any respect for the art, you will stop what you are doing. Have a good day! Alex Linian P.S. I also hated the essays.

Alex:
Tyler is not the first to offer a money back guarantee. Syd Bergson did the same thing in Miami during the 1960's and 1970's. Regarding the rest of your analysis, well, I'll leave that up to you. Well, I read it. Alex, you are a man of impeccable taste. I find it presumptuous that someone who has been performing for such a short time, should publish this derivative nonsense. There are some good thoughts here, but they aren't his. They are cribbed from elsewhere. And if he thinks this is worth $120.00, HA HA HA HA HA HA HA This should be called -- How to be a Blaine WANNABEE.

I have not and will not go to the site. Nothing against the publisher but I'm too busy trying to digest and understand the originators of many Theories in Magic. Just over the last year, I did look into the "theories" of young and recent thinkers/publishers and found, as Bill stated, ALL of it derived, "borrowed" or flat out stolen and offered as their own.
Some of them so caught up in what they thought was new and "revolutionary" that they hadn't time to do their research. The research that would of made clear someone had already thought of it. |

I LOVE it when 18-year-old street magicians publish their theories about how to make magic work.
I especially love the part about how to get girls with magic. Daniel, take my word for it. Girls are a lot of fun, but at some point, one will own you and you will have to feed her. That responsibility can take a lot of fun out of the whole thing.

O.K. I am on page 27 and it's really not that bad. A magician needs to have some kind of ego to be able to perform in my oppinion (this is way over the top) BUT-
as one who subscribes to the law of contrary public oppinion, I going to submit myself to the entire 136 page doccument... Those who are open minded enough to view his theories with anthropological eyes might just learn a great deal from the excercise

Yes... anthropology. That's a good one. Adolescent psychology too.

OK, you guys got me so curious about this that I broke down and had to look. Interesting that it was nothing the publisher said in the initial post but the following comments that got me to look. I didn't have the strength and discipline to be on my way and return to my books. Like Superman weakened before the kryptonite, I gave in.
NOW! Please tell me I didn't read these words somewhere in there: "Do you know how to attract girls, and how magic can help you get a girlfriend?" Please? |

Read with an open mind, however do not elucidate as an example of "how not to draw a house"

The guys who always got the hot chicks before the rock and roll era really hit were the trumpet players.
It wasn't because they knew psychology. Or street magic.

If lawyers are disbarred and clergymen defrocked, doesn't it follow that magicians can be delusional?
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I do not subscribe to the theory "Those who can not do, teach." As such, before taking a serious interest in a work, I like a little back history on the acomplishments of the writer. I have, as yet, found none for this book.
With that ion consideration, I did find, near the top of the linked page, a list of questions the author asks perspective buyers to ask themselves. I find these questions to be the wrong ones. Many of these questions show a distinct misplacement of priorities. Pure magic? What exactly is "pure magic"? I think I know what it was ment to mean, but it is very poorly worded. Best places to buy magic and which places will scam you? Who is this book writen for? Someone who saw a magic performance and thought it might be cool to be a magician? Invent original magic and make money in the process? Perhaps the question should be altered to one that asks if you should do these things. Making hunreds of dollars by simply performing magic? Not all quality magicians do, or want to, make money performing magic. Do you? Do you have a client list? Why is it not in the non existant page about you on this site? Double any reaction from a spectator? All you want is double? They should react to you, not tricks/effects. How magic can help you get a girldfriend. Outstanding. Do you actualy want some chick who follows you home because you did a "cool trick"? Myself I have much highers standards, but then the "chick getting days" are behind me. Can you instantly counteract someone who gives you a hard time? Yes, because audiences love nothing more than a "jerk deul". How to be funny? Is there only one way? Do you know all they ways? Do you know the way best for each personality? Fears? Actualy yes, I find that my triscadecaphobia prevents me from using the King in card tricks. Should you walk up to anyone, anytime, anywhere, without nerves and perform magic? Not everyone is interested. Could it be there is a lot more than this question eludes to? I don't even know what "the essentials of street magic" are, but I'm betting they aren't what it takes to be a complete magician of any kind. Mighty lofty claims in these questions and the garuntee that they will be answered. Maybe back to the drawingboard? |

Any accomplished writer will slap his or her name, face, and background information on their works. I do care to know what your experience and school of thought is before reading your material. If it's not the inside book cover of a hardcopy, it's somewhere in their E-book. I recently visited a website owned and operated by an acquaintance of an acquaintance and was shocked at a couple of things. First, his website promotes (in my opinion) a sick religious and political school of thought. We won't go there! The other thing that amazed me was the number of registered members and the unquestionable purchase and practice of materials sold at the site. However, I give him credit for slapping his name and face on the site and it's material. He proudly boasts of his accomplishments. He sure isn't hiding behind anything and stands firm on his story and seems to be sticking with it. Posted: Jun 17, 2006 12:45pm ----------------------------------------------- I think kids these days would be far more hesitant to "publish" something on the Internet if they had to take the approach we did when we were teens. When I was 18, if I wanted to publish a book, I had to, at minimum, do the following: *Write on subject of interest *Do research to find if there is a market for it. *Generate working capitol, business entity *Find printers for estimates, typesetting, or desktop publish *Send manuscript to publications for review. *Develop marketing strategy, advertising, and promotion campaign *Distribution through retail bookstores, libraries, schools, wholesale. With consideration for foreign rights, subsidiary rights, book clubs, and possible publisher for distribution. *Warehousing, shipping, sales. AND THEN HANG ON TIGHT FOR THE CRITICS!!! And hopefully be asked for a reprint. That's just the tip of that iceberg and what I was facing as a teen had I wanted to be published. Today, the same teens "publish" using a little webspace and via the internet create their E-book. An E-book FOR SALE. And of those I've seen, poorly written and full of old and borrowed ideas. That is not always a crime especially if they gave credit where due but there's too much of this stuff going on. I'm almost 40 years old in that picture on the boat and I'm suffering from Information Overload like never before! There is more crap out there making it increasingly difficult to find a real gem. Many of these poorly conceived and written publications serve as a royal waste of time for some of us who do read. Many of these young "publishers" (based on what I've seen) express many of the same ideas I had back then but no Internet to publish and broadcast thoughts overnight. Thank God or I'd be adding to the clutter. Does it make any of their ideas or writings New, Revolutionary, or even Wonderful? NO, NO, and NO. I for once, would love to read an e-book published by a young person who first understands many of the originator's theories, second, perhaps expounds on them by suggesting how they can be applied to our modern world and modern magic, and third, gives credit where due. That's all but I know it's asking way too much. I would actually pay for literary criticism on such Greats in Magic. Yes, I would pay you to dissect it and share your thoughts on such. It's the rest of this stuff that tries to sell itself off as 'new' and necessary for my success that I've found to be baseless and impotent at best. I had several boxes full of personal notes and thoughts I'd written over the years. I recently cleaned them out by going through every single page. Five boxes of manuscripts were filtered down to half a box. After a little time and research, I found 90+ percent of what I'd written has already been stated AND PUBLISHED in some manner or another. I suspect the remaining 10 percent will be whittled away at as I continue my research. If I end up with just 1% or one idea then I have a starting point. That or I can just insist the spine of the book include the letter "F" for Fiction... |
