If you're gonna read just one book this year read ...the Da Vinci Code.
if you're reading 2 then make the second (e-)book Michael Pauls -Show No Mercy. its been a long while since a magic purchase held the same level of excitement for we from first reading the advert to opening the box. As far as books go, art of astonishment series was my last viceral jolt. Thankfully , Show No Mercy showed up! The effects: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ flicker: When us magicians read the description of an effect -we get all excited and then we read the explanation which leaves us with a saddened feeling. NOT FLICKER! This thing reads like an absolute lie! nonsense!it can't happen! Maybe you thought it was possible with sleights that would twist your fingers so badly you would need the "jaws of life" to seperate them..and what about the spectators who burn holes through your hands as they watch ? Firstly, the effect is almost sleight free (and the one you have to do-is childsplay)and secondly, you want them to burn your hands with this effect..you want them to stare hard as you make the back of a SIGNED card flicker from red to blue to red then permenantly to blue. Don't even think of dismissing this effect as anything less than a magicial miracle Candy Opener: ------------- A flash of fire produces a fireball candy in wrapper.the magician then slowly and almost visually makes the candy vanish from the wrapper( done with one hand which is outstretched) you hands never go close to your mouth but you open your mouth in a devious smile to display the candy. The thing I like about this effect is the logic. fire->fireball candy in wrapper-> magically make candy disappear from wrapper and appear in mouth. Spectator can keep the wrapper ( and the candy if she's cute..wink wink nudge nudge) This is an attraction effect..you don't say anything..the flash of fire in the beginning grabs the attention. The logic,as I've said, is so strong you don't need patter! that's Not Magic: ---------------- this is a great essay about stripping away the crap we surround our magic with. He talks about patter and how it can sometimes destroy your effect before its even started! Michael vents his pet peeves on close up magic! I wish it was longer and he went into detail about flourishes (lol! just kidding Michael!) Flashes and Ashes: ------------------ this is my second favourite trick in this book: a card is selected ,signed and placed on the table amongst other cards. the deck is tabled near the cards. A brilliant flash of fire on the surface of the deck leaves an arrow of ashes that points to the selected card. Like Michael states , the principle behind this effect will have your brain off and running. Mine is ticking away deviously thinking about things I could do with this! Changing the change: -------------------- Michael writes of an experience he has had. It reads like a real life illustration of what Paul Harris wrote in his Art of astonishment essays. Read it! Reality Displacement: --------------------- A card is select and signed..the card is slowly placed out jogged from the middle of the deck. The cards face is even shown to the audience as it slides in - it really looks that clean! and BAM! the card is in your other hand. This looks like real magic! Ambitious card punters celebrate -here's that killer phase you been looking for!!! Coins Across: ------------- According to every other review says this is the star effect..I have have not given it the time it deserves yet but I will say this: Its gutsy and elegant at the same time- there's a vanish in it that I love : a slow motion ,open hand ,visual vanish of a coin -best part.no sleight of hand! If you're a coin worker - or just a close up magician looking for a visual, and audible coins across to add to your set you'd be hard pressed to find somethign better than this! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The package : ------------- in addition to the E-book there's 2 video's included. One is a quick instructional video on most of the effects. Michael included this video to help us visual (and dyslexic) magicians learn his material better. The second clip is a demo clip which can be viewed at his site. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Bottom line: This e-book is an amazing buy. I would have paid the total price for flicker alone! it's that strong. These effects play as good as they read. The effects are visual and direct. Patter is kept to a smidge as the effects speak for themselves. True to his character Michael leaves me wanting more of his work! I love this book and you will too! Oh, and Michael is a great guy to do business with! Magically Yours MacGyver (By the way, I'm not paid by Michael to write this review! although cash donations are accepted |

Sorry...I really don't understand the popularity of E-books that have 5 or 6 tricks in them and sell for $20-$25. I'm sure this ebook is very good, but IMHO it's still way overpriced. You can get Paul Harris' Art of Astonishment 3 book set (since it was mentioned in the first post) for around $100 and those three books contain over 900 pages and 222 effects from one of the most creative minds in magic.

Show me a booklet with just ONE effect that I think is good enough to add to my act, and I'll pay much more then 20 for it. It's not as much about the quantity as it is about the quality, and I pride myself on releasing material that is free of filler. Each booklet contains VERY usable material that comes directly out of my show (hence the live performance videos). Is it worth 20? Depends on how much of the stuff you are able to use. Using the same arguement, why spend 100 on one particular trick when you can buy an e-book with six wonderful effects for 20? I guess it's all relative. Divide the cost of the e-book by number of effects and you'll come out UNDER $4. Are you suggesting that 4 bucks is too much to pay for an addition to your act?
??? I've gotten SEVERAL e-mails from people who clearly stated that they would have paid 20 bucks for "flicker" alone. I guess it's all about how you value certain purchases. But lets keep this a review, and not let this thread disentigrate into an "e-books suck" debate. Thanks Mike |

Harv,
I posted about Mike's ebooks in other posts. I bought Show no Mercy and Simply Devastating and have a big smile on face for doing so. These effects are hard hitting, direct , in your face magic that leaves the specs wanting more. I also said in a different post that these books should be priced higher. It is rare that a book comes out where you can immediately put them in your act. Spectator cuts the aces for example is a killer. As is the rest! I'm having a blast with all of these effects. Michael, I am tempted to buy Show No Mercy based on the great reviews. I'm definitely not trying to bash Ebooks or you for that matter. It's just when I look at some of the books I have such as Close Up and Personal, AOA, The Magic of Michel Ammar and the like...books that are full of great useable material and cost around $45....that I question the price of relatively small Ebooks.

I guess that's understandable. It's all about what's valuable to you I guess. In that case, everything is relative.
If you grab the notes, please drop me an e mail to let me know how you like them. |

Well, AOA is chock full of great material. However, most of it was previously released material that had been out several years. Usually, when material is first released, it's released at a higher price. As time goes by, things become less expensive. It works that way with all kinds of products.
I am seriously considering buying these notes, btw. The coin material sounds very interesting.

Show No Mercy is easily worth the price.
As a side note - I had a problem downloading the book. Less than a half-hour after I emailed my problem to Michael he had it solved for me. Pretty good service, if you ask me. |

Just to clarify..
in my review I did not compare these notes to AOA, I was talking about the excitement you get knowing you have something very special in your hands..something new in terms of presentation as well as method I've paid over $40 dollars for a single effect (like colour fusion) and I hardly use it..(haven't this year). Michaels effects are EASY and VISUAL. The card effects are more tricks with cards than card tricks...if you know whatta mean.. In the end you have to decide if its worth $20 to YOU. The general outlook on SHOW NO MERCY is that its worth it! |

If you decide to buy this Ebook, you might as well save yourself some time and buy Simply Devastating while you're there, because after reading this you WILL go back and get the other....I did.

Okay, I bought the ebook and... it's great. Flicker is genius. I've been doing it all day for my own amusement. The partial coin routines are worth the price of the book.

Sorry Bugjack, no vid of "Flicker". I intentionally didn't put one on the teaser. I wanted to keep this "underground" and only give exposure of it to the people who bought the notes. It's not for a lack of visual though... that's for sure (as I'm sure you gathered by all of the comments about it here and on the "show no mercy" review post).
