I saw an online demo video of this and it looks REALLY good!
It says he is a Japanese magician but I live in Japan and I have never heard of him. I suspect he is not Japanese. "Lam" is also not a Japanese name. I might get this.

He's from Hong Kong. Hocus Pocu's got the info mixed up. Then again, it is rare to have a Hong Kong or Chinese magician putting out a tape/DVD. I'm Chinese by the way so that wasn't an insult if anybody tried taking it that way

I received the Joker Lam "Parasol Aywhere" DVD yesterday from Hocus Pocus, along with a set of parasols. I use a parasol production as part of my Kuma Tubes routine. This always gets a good reaction, so I wanted to look into additional production methods. I understand that Fukai has a parasol video, but I have never seen it.
The video retails for $45, and is well done. When it started playing, there were a lot of oriental characters scrolling up the screen, occasionally insterspersed with an English word. At first I was afraid that I might have been sent the wrong version of the DVD, but I think this was just the Cantonese version of the ubiquitous FBI warning. Although the DVD was originally shot in Cantonese, there is a menu option for English ovderdubs, with English subtitles. The only thing that bothered me about the dialog was the overuse of the word "okay", but it was more humorous than a distraction. The DVD is divided into several main parts - "Essentials" (basic techniques and equipment), "Performance" (a video of Joker Lam performing in several different venues), "Explanation" (fourteen different explanations of production methods), and "Experience Sharing" (other production methods and tips). Interestingly, the DVD does not actually play the segments in this order. The "Essentials" section shows the various gimmicks used in parasol production, along with various methods for loading the parasols. The gimmicks are all simple in nature, but for some reason their construction is never explained on the video. "Explanation" addresses everything from single parasol productions to three- and five-parasol climax endings and jumbo parasol productions. It shows how to "split" a parasol, and covers five different "Japanese" productions using silks. "Experience Sharing" gives some additional production techniques such as using confetti and production coils. Done properly, these could be very effective but the video doesn't do these productions justice. It was probably a simple problem of not wanting to waste a lot of confetti and coils for the video, but I would like to have seen how they will actually look on stage. This was the only (very) minor disappointment on the video. The parasols themselves are inexpensive and appear to be well-made. They come in a set of seven different colors for $60. They look and feel just like the ones that have been sold for years by Magic Hands as a set of five and a production gimmick for $250. I'm not sure whether individual parasols are available for purchase. They are not listed on the Hocus Pocus website, and the http://www.livemagic.com.hk website is in Cantonese, so I can't search for them. For a little more than $100 (or less if you are a Hocus Pocus member) you can get into the "parasol production business". These make for a colorful routine that is suitable for use in almost any stage or parlor performance situation. The techniques are not difficult, and the equipment is now inexpensive. Amos McCormick

Yes Amos, great review. Thank you.
I am surprised that cardcaptor, who says he is a lover of parasol magic, would not be the first one to buy this and give the review, but is the one hesitant to purchase this. |

Hey! I am also a lover of parasol magic. And I have also got the DVD along with the Parasol Set one week ago. The information on the DVD is very useful. Joker Lam shares many different kinds of parasol production techniques. He is really a talented magician and teacher. His performance on the DVD is very very great! And he teaches all the techniques very detailed and covers everything you should know for the parasol production. Well done!
For the parasols themselves, they are in very high quality with a very reasonable price! I have been playing with the parasols every night after I got them! Highly recommend! Amos, I think the equipment(holders) of the parasol can be easily made by yourself. I have made 3 holders after I have watched the video. Joe |

I heard a humor that Fukai was crying......
If you watched Fukai performed once, you will know instantly the Mr Lam is just standing on the foot of a mountain. |

I've seen Fukai's act live, and it was THE parasol act.
All I can say is, it still is. Huron

But I don't see the relevance of discussing Fukai's Parasol Act here when the topic is a review of joker lam's parasol act DVD. Perhaps if Fukai's Act is available on a similar DVD and then we could have a product comparison. As far as I know Fukai's material was on a video which you could only purchase if you went to his lecture. But maybe things have changed now and we can get commerically availble material in English. Whould anyone care to comment?

I just recieved Joker Lams dvd and parasols. All I can say is that the DVD and box of 7 parasols is a steal for the money you pay for them. Those parasols are easily $15-20 a piece sold seperately. Very nice video, straight to the point. Parasols are colorful and spring well. I am excited to add these to my stage show.

Magic Hands as a set of five and a production gimmick for $250.
-I bought this set. Really expensive. It comes with quality German Silks too. This release is really a steal, making the necessary props affordable than before. Excellent review Amos. Will buy the DVD this week. |
