Hi,
I realize it is in one of the Tarbell books. I believe it is in Tarbell Vol 7? I do not have Tarbell, so I was wondering if this effect is worth at all. I have heard that you need to wear a jacket for this. Any thoughts? Phil |
mdspark Special user 784 Posts |
Yes you do need to wear a jacket. If you havent seen it in action..L&L has a video clip on their website. For what it is designed to do it works great. Crap? that's a matter of opinion of course... Max Maven has a similar effect in one of his color series..differnt method though..where the cards cling to your hand.
The dvd is, of course, free with any order..I got a copy the other day...there is a very interesting sequence with 2 pencils..a Fred Kapps handling. Dual Control is in Tarbell 7, I have it...but the 2-pencil sequence is not in there...This sequence is difficult to work out even if you know the secret...a more involved handling. Heck, its free I say good trick if you like the effect(s) and great price. |

I bought this from Supreme many years ago under the title of "Mesmer Gimmick". I have used it very successfully, although it can get tangled. I imagine it would be a bit tricky to make one up yourself; my first one fell apart and I couldn't reassemble it.
The two pencil sequence is very effective and not at all difficult. Barry |

In Greg Edmonds' Mindset 2" booklet he features a "Dual Control" type gimmick he calls the "Kling Thing (KT)"... he credits the gimmick on ideas from Albenice, Behnke, Cardini and Vernon... "KT" is similar in working to Alan Alan's "Dual Control" except it's a bit more streamlined and the get-into is a bit easier... I've used KT several times and it's very effective... really puzzles spectators when you use it for PK/magnetic type effects and because it leaves you fairly "clean" it completely fries them (the the reset can be done right before their eyes)...
Original copies of both Greg's books (Mindset #1 & #2) are hard to come by... I acquired the rights to both books and gimmicks about 6-months ago from Greg and own the remaining original copies of both books (about 10 of book #1 and 3 of book #2 remain)... my company "Mystery Arts Publishing" will be releasing a new edition of both books plus the gimmicks for the effects in the next couple of months (including a brand new "Mindset #3" with all new effects and contributions from some of the top mentalism minds around)... Success!!! Tony Blake The Thoughtreader Õ¿Õ¬ PS: We will be releasing Jack Kent Tillar's powerful "TRIO" book within the next month featuring 3 complete acts for mentalists... at the recent P.E.A. Meeting Of The Minds in New Jersey it was a huge hit and sold out (there was a limited edition PEA version)... The new release features Jack's latest manuscript "The Fund-Raising Mentalist" which maps out a complete act you can use for charity and fundraising events... the book when released will also include an audio CD with an interview with Jack on each of the 3 acts plus his views on mentalism and performance... |

I stand corrected I missed the free bit in the original post.
(Free makes things we would not consider using worth looking at). However I still do not care for it myself.

Hi,
Thanks guys for the reviews. mdspark, I was wondering if the gimmick is difficult to make at all. As Barry has mentioned problems with it. Will it cost a lot to make the gimmick? And how durable is it? Tony, thanks. The Mindset books seems interesting. Does Kling Thing require a jacket too? Thanks Phil |

BTW, Alan Alan didn't invent this gimmick. Here's part of the introduction in the Supreme instruction booklet (written by Lewis Ganson):
"The clever little piece of apparatus which makes this possible is based on an idea by the late G W Hunter. The introduction of ***** ****** has enabled a wonderful refinement to be added. Both Harry Hickson and Alan Alan have evolved moves with the improved version...." GW Hunter was also the inventor of, among other things, the Impossible Knot and the Snapper. Barry |

I recently purchased something from L&L for the expressed purpose of getting the Dual Control DVD (and I did immedietly see the applications for a metal bending routine).
The gimmick does look easy to make, and yes it probably could break if you're not careful, but that goes for many magic props. At least the materials are readily available and affordable. (I don't want to say too much for fear of revealing something). |

Hi e-inc,
Does constructing the gimmick take long? Phil |
mdspark Special user 784 Posts |
No it doesn't take long at all to make..very easy to make..but will have to be 'played with' to get proper adjustment.
On the free DVD Alan Allan and Patrick Page do not claim originality of it and do give a history of the gimmick and credit to others. |

I have not seen the d.v.d. yet but I have seen Alan Alan use this in person.
It is a very good item to have handy. I know that Alan has one in each jacket he owns. How many jackets I have no idea. But it is very easy to make and put into a jacket so even if you had 100 jackets the time spent on making one for each one would be very worth it. In My opinon the dual controll is a very under rated gem. |

Honestly don't know if that is or is similar to Dual Control but there's a simple and quick set-up any child can do, as they say, with just two simple common office props we all have and that works wonders. Can also be made vanish or put in position ready to use. Found in a children magic and playful kid science books.

I saw Alan perform this many times in his London shop Alan Alan's Magic Spot, now closed as Alan is retired.
Jay Marshall also performs it on his Steven's video (DVD) Table Crap. It is worth learning as it has many applications. |

Tarbell 7 only gives Alan's routines with cards and coins, but includes an improvement to the gimmick. |
