Hello,
Has anyone witness this before ? Sounds very creepy, but could be very cheesy depending on the way to perform it. Any info ? Thanks

I have seen this I think either in Strange Ceremonies or Psychic paradoxes where a performer does this - a bunch of photos of the effect - it really did look good - I keep thinking I want to try it too but the set-up and having to perform a bunch of acts with the "setup" to me worries me.... since I often sweat when getting into the groove of the performance

Hi Ben!
As for the Face - actually, this type of effect I saw described as well ina Doc Sheils book and a Charles Cameron book - symbols on foreheads like pentagrams appearing - I got to dig up this all - and the photos of the skeletal face are indeed in Eugene's STRANGE CEREMONIES.... As for the worry .... but basically it is at I said before - I worry about sweat... because this type of effect, as Boroding states - must be at the end of the show.... and so depending how long you are performing under excitment and the lights and moving around... I always wondered if the prep won't get ruined... Dr S

Maybe someone out there actually tried this?
I suppose with the Skorpion Kit doodads - similar style effects might be getting honed out.... I have actually thought about trying this at some point - I've made a ton of modifications to the "Game of Death" by Parr so that it runs as a 7 minute theatre piece - I thought it would be cool to suddenly shift into ol' Bonehead at the climax....

Because it´s make up, I see the same problem with sweat like Dr spectator.
And of course the price with nearly 400$ is a high-end price.

Hmmm, is thi s being marketed and I missed it (at $400??)
I would look carefully about the structure of the theatrical presentation you are doing. Will adding this bit at the end add or detract form the desired image, idea or outcome of the current piece? How large is the venue you are performing for, is it a parlor sized gorup where all will see this, and gain the full effect? Is this a full sized theater, where those in the back are likely to miss the close if they are not paying attention? If you think the effect will truly enhance the show, then the $400 is money well spent. If your show is well attended, you should make that back in a couple of performances. As to the sweat issue, a lot will depend on who is doing your makeup, and what the makeup used is made from. Theater makeup usually is made to stay on with sweat. Powder reduces the shine on the surface. Working with a good makeup tech will solve this concern. Good luck with your work! Kay

I think that we will need a video demo on this one, before paying $595 for it.
I hope that it will come. As for the price, it might not be only make-up involved.

At a couple of the Invocationals I saw George Kirkendall perform "the Philosopher's Stone." It looked great! His face visibly changed to that of a skull. I understand that he was marketing the illusion at one time.

I didn't realize it was for sale $595 - again, I think it was Kirkendall whose photos appear in the Strange Ceremonies book (I got to dig it up) - the real cost I think is shelling out for the photonic source and the cloaking object... although I wonder if some stage environents might actually already have such gizmos and thus all you need is the makeup....
I actually think, not including the price of a make-up artist's time - maybe $250 initial outlay that would last a heck of a time.... If you like playing with the new black decks of cards... the photonic source might be useful for other effects... not to mention the Skorpion style stuff.... I hope someone tries it and posts back here

The version I know is the original version by borodin. He also explained it in his book "final curtain". This version is made for close up or for only a few people but not for stage.
595$ is really a lot of money. Who sell it for this amount?

I also saw Kirkendall perform this at an Andruzzi Invocational in Chicago. It was done in a hotel room and the change was gradual, and included his hands ( a Philosophers Stone presentation).George had the makeup on as he was schmoozing with the room and I can say I didn't see the makeup, although others may have. Just another bit of info, George was selling this at that time,in the late 80's or early 90's, for $1500 for the entire package, presentaion, other props etc.
All the best, John |

With care there should be no problem as liong as the makeup is applied correctly. Robin DeWitt

Hello Dr Spektor. Pleased to hear you've been reshaping "A Game of Life and Death" to suit your own style! Did you make a deliberate effort to rewrite the piece, or did a new version gradually develop as you performed it? Just curious, because a few people have emailed questions to me about adapting published material.
I've done the face-to-skull transformation effect mentioned here. The origins of the effect are shadowy and vague; it can't be credited to Borodin or Kirkendall or Cameron or Andruzzi -- or anyone we know of, really. Guy Jarrett described the effect in his classic book Jarrett Magic, and Jim Steinmeyer speculates that Jarrett may have been inspired by seeing a similar, though probably less macabre, effect in the Ziegfeld Follies! Everyone's approach to the method has been different, from the nuts-and-bolts mechanics of the lighting to the makeup used. I consulted some experts in theatrical makeup for advice before I did my version. I saw Kirkendall perform the effect several times at the Invocational coventions, and in normal lighting I noticed signs of the makeup -- but only when I knew to look for them! By the end of the night, after fulfilling so many requests to see the effect, his makeup was somewhat ragged from perspiration and wear. From that, I assume he used a standard creme-based makeup. My friend Dan Mindo has also worked extensively with this effect. He built a custom kit for performing it almost anywhere. Questions for him are best asked on his discussion site, bizarremagic.net. With some ingenuity and experimentation, a practical method for performing this effect can be assembled for about $50. |

Hi David!
I'll PM you the details - I've actually getting some advice on how to shape it into a theatrical piece from David Ben.... and yup, I guess I was thinking turning into ol' Bonehead at the very end (with the kicker effect I'll e-mail you) to me sounded like a good idea - and my thoughts on how to do it are different from the published methods... I'll send you the info later today when I get the chance! I was actually waiting until I had the thing polished, scripted and then I was actually going to PM you indy to let you see what I did with the core effect for your feedback and advice! Looks like the Bonehead discussion has acted as a catalyst! All the best, Bruce
