Your at best a part time performer with no training. Cover it in all the manuer you want to, a rose won't grow.
Ok if you blame circumstances for your predicimant, then fine. Why encourage someone without those constraints to follow that path? Do you thin maybe guys doing stage work would be looked at differently if they DID take the time and money to get the associations certifications? Do you think they would be looked down upon if they were NOT self taught. Sounds to be like you made your own bed.

Ok, so following that, I should go get my diploma in hypnotherapy and once I have it, start stage work. Sweet, would you like to explain to me why pay for something which is null the moment I step onto stage?
Also - yep - I am a part time performer with no formal training. So are most of the workers I've met over here. Also I don't "blame" my circumstances, this is whats happened so I deal with it. Why not encourage someone to follow a path well trod, atleast he's on here so he can seek advice. Now,lets see, from what I understand he's a student to start with, so finacially not well off (like most students). Now if he's going to start, he's going to start. Most people don't wait years to be able to do something. I would prefer personally that an individual have a network if he has to go it alone. I for one wish I had one when I started. PS - funny you point out "looking down upon". The only people that "look down upon" stage workers are the therapists over here, whether self taught or not....not the stage workers. Again, must be a different thing over here. |

The point is your encouraging them to start at 15! Man you just don't get it and I am sick of trying to show you in a polite fashion.

Actually the problem becomes when you place ideas that are dangerous out there and then say "lets take it to PM" the wrong idea is still out there.

A circular argument is non productive for starters and was not personally my intention. We are not going to agree on this and that seems clear.
You consider it dangerous, misguided or just arrogant, that's all good...you opinion which you are more than entitled to, but I will not continue to argue this on open forum in a thread which I have inadvertently caused to be hijacked, especially when I do not agree with what your saying. |

One thing I will say for strangelittleman that I think is to his credit is something he said in a post quite a ways back: "I care for the people on stage like thay are family."
To me, that goes a LONG way toward keeping things safe (unless you come from a dysfunctional family, of course - kidding SLM - I am assuming that you don't). As a full time performer myself, I have NO problem with the part-timers at all. Some of the best stage hypnotists I have ever seen are part-timers. What is far more important to me is how those performers deal with their volunteers and with their audiences and how well they THINK THINGS THROUGH. Forinstance: I know several hypnotists who use a "sinking into the waters of relaxation" induction." Others use an induction that invloves feeling a gas flowing into their veins and some wrap their volunteers in a suggested (not real) blanket of relaxation. Sinking below the waves of relaxation could trigger a phobia of drowning - a common phobia. Having a gas flow into your veins could trigger a VERY unpleasant reaction in anyone familiar with what an embolism is - like me or any scuba diver. Wrapping someone in a blanket that surrounds them like a cocoon could panic someone who is claustrophobic. Get the idea? And being careful about triggering trance while people are standing and leting them fall to the floor is just begging for a suit for an injury FROM that fall. Slip and falls are the most common liability lawsuit today, folks! And the picnic stunt with the ants crawling on a person? Don't even get me started on people with phobias about insects! The key here is thinking things through and LOOKING for where Murphy's Law can bite you in your posterior regions! As Hilgard noted, people in trance become more literal in the way they take suggestions as their trance state deepens (Hilgard & Hilgard, The Experience of Hypnosis). And this is where a young and inexperienced hypnotist can seriously fall down in their first workings and even an experienced hypnotist can run into difficulty if not careful. This is why one should get the training, whether it is "valid" from an academic standpoint or not. The training, if it's any good at all, will help the student identify the common stumbling points, the places where their technique could cause the eruption of an abreaction and where they could also cause confusion on the part of their volunteers when it comes to the suggestions that they give. This is why I keep taking classes and going to seminars myself. Actors keep going to classes to hone their skills. Magicians do the same, so do mimes, jugglers, mentalists, artists, singers, programmers, public speakers, and musicians. Why do hypnotists have such a tough time understanding this basic concept?
