If you use a puppet in your show do you think you should always use the same one? I like to use different puppets for different shows but some people say you should use the same one. Do you think it is good marketing to use the same one or does it really matter?

It wouldn't matter unless your puppet has a reputation all it's own.....Which is something you should strive for in the childrens market.
There are pro's and cons to each answer but personally, I would rather develop a sidekick with 1 single puppet as opposed to using different ones. Working with the same puppet allows you to develop that character better for different situations. The only reason I can see using different puppets is if you are searching for the right character. Having multiple routines for the same puppet helps with the repeat customers. But then it's fairly easy to transition a routine from puppet to puppet if needed. Which puppets do you use? |

I recommend using one puppet regularly, your favourite, but including other puppets also. Sometimes a different puppet can inspire a routine that you wouldn't have thought of if you always stick to the same one. Having a "sidekick" is good too, and makes you a double act.

A regular puppet can quickly become a signature piece in your show if the entertainment value is there. For a little while now, I've had a 3 foot tall girl puppet that I've been thinking of incorporating into my show. The big problem is that I don't vent and pantomime will only get me so far. So, I recently purchased some of the Axtrax tapes. I'm hoping that I'll be able to combine one or two of those routines with my puppet to make an interesting interlude.

Hi Bill
I also use different puppets with different shows also. It is much easier to set up different shows if you don't have to move props or puppets from one show to another. Also if you are doing theme shows different puppets fit different themes. It works to your advantage if you are trying to book multiple shows for the same group in the same season if your show are completely different. The client likes your performance style and the audience reaction to you, but doesn't want to show the same thing over and over. Having a completely different show to offer can get you extra work. Even if you have a signiture puppet you may not be able to do everything you want with just one character. Dave Risley have his rabbit in a hat that is very famous in his area, but he still uses different puppets with different routines in his show. |

My wife and I joke that we are "Married with Puppets".
Although Nigel, the puppet that rocks and talks is in most shows, we bring others depending on the need. Many times when out in the community, people will ask me how "Nigel" is doing. For our shows on reading we added the Axtell Chimp and Baby Puppets. They fit well into Junie B. book where she thinks her new baby brother is a "Cutest little monkey". Many of the elementary school classes 2nd and 3rd grade classes are reading the Junie B. series. For an older elementary class today, Help I'm trapped in ___. we used our alien pupppet to talk about one of the Todd Strasser books. Last weekend we just finished a run of the play Wise Woman. George McDonald who influenced C.S. Lewis(Chronicles of Narnia) wrote the short story that the play was based on. Prince was played by one of my dog puppets. The actor/puppeteer was all in black.(Japanese style puppetry) with knee pads under his black pants. It was amazing how quickly he picked up on technique. In August we will play Herb in Godspell. One of our puppets (Vent Figure) will be used in the play, which also will be using magic. Be safe, well and creative Harris Deutsch
